Because of Strike.

60% Of U. S. Output

strike last year created ‘a scarcity of soda ash from which it is made. ! Sixty per cent of the nation's output of soda ash was affected when members of United Mine | ° Workers District 50 struck. Among the plants affected was one in Syracuse, N. Y., which ‘ makes most of the baking soda housewives use, 3 v Wholesale grocers say the bakIng soda industry hasn't been able to catch up with demand since the strike, which began in July and ended in October. But they think the end is in sight. Part of today’s scarcity of baking soda is due to the nation's rearmament program. Soda ash is essential in chemical warfare. Even atomic bomb production requires soda ash, mostly in chemical research.

What do we mean by cli in Between"?

That's what you suffer if your home is heated by Yd fuels that popon and pop-off. It's that uncomfortable area between the extreme high and low temperatures

produced by a burner that lacks the constantly active fuel bed of a stoker-fired furnace.

The burner pops on when the room temperature d ut while the burner was off the fire was out—

and the furnace cooled off.

And so the piped fuel must preheat the vhol furnace to a high degree before it generates enough heat to transfer some to you upstairs. Meanwhile t room temperature drops still lower—and you have
