America’s ‘Voice’ Now! Bigger, More Powerful
System of 7 Networks Broadcasts To World in 24 Different Languages

brought discussion of “The Voice of America,” the official radio “station” of the United States, out onto the front pages of the daily newspapers so frequently of late, chances
few Americans bother with short wave radio.
Hear it or not, though, “The Voice of America” is a big and powerful operation that's getting bigger and more powerful all the time, a vast system of seven languages, theoretically blanketing the earth “to promote a better understanding of the United States among the peoples of the world and to strengthen co-opera-tive international relations.” But don't think America is the only country trying to sell itself in this way. Sixty-seven others do the same kind of propagandizing night and day and your Uncle 8am is only fourth on the list as far as size is concerned, the British, Russians and Brazilians being one, two, three, at least for the moment. n » STILL, EVEN though fourth, your Uncle is doing a representative job without really turning on

stations operating in the Ney York, Boston, Cincinnati and San Francisco areas with 18 relays in other countries, a total staff of about 700 and has been spending at the rate of $8.5 million a year but, as the world situation darkens, this figure will climb.
Not bad for a 10-year-old. Just how many people “The Voice” reaches is difficult to determine because of Russian “jamming” and other factors, but its audience is safely! in the multimillion class. Programming for this audience consists mostly of news, news commentaries and features, Jdut there's music, too, American music: Eddie Condon’s and Benny Goodman's and the music of Martin Block's ‘Make Believe Ballroom” are all extremely popular in foreign lands. These and other artists, like Bing Crosby, Burl Ives, Jack Smith, Elmer Davis, Fulton Lewis Jr. and Edward R. Murrow, and
|programs like “Your Hit Parade,” ~1“The
American Round — Tal and “University Theatre” are secured free or by special arrangement whereby “The Voice” is allowed to transeribe any program right off the air for rebroadcast
purposes.
“VOICE” BEAMS in any particular direction depend, largely, on two things: the number of people involved and their relative friendliness to the United States.
Where, for example, “The Voice” * Imight send only a few hours of

A listener from another and! not-so-happy part of Europe explained how “the possibility of at last being able to correspond per-| mits me to thank you for all the broadcasts we were able to get in spite of jamming during the years of our desolation, which are still not at an end. You must know, you and the BRC (the British Broadcasting Corporation), that you continue to make it possible for us to endure our moral and physical miseries,”
