Before the guerrillas can apply for amnesty, they are ambushed by Union cavalrymen. The surviving guerrillas escape, and lose all chance for pardon by the government.

A Union officer, Ward Bond, whose family has suffered from the James boys’ outlawry during the war, sets out to settle aceounts with them.

Jesse and Frank flee. Feeling that soclety has “done them dirt,” they organize a gang and start robbing for a living. Frank quits the rackets and goes legit, but Jesse is shot in the back before he can get away from the territory. Now, what if every person who feels he has a grudge against society were to strap on a brace of six-guns and start murdering and robbing? Wouldn't it be rather sad if we had hundreds of men like Howard Unruh of New Jersey loose on the streets? Unruh felt society had wronged him, but there are few people who will condone his mass murdering. If men such as Jesse and Frank James were honestly concerned with becoming decent citizens, they could have appealed their cases. right to the highest court in the nation. That's the nice thing about the United States

wars are not fought on the fields of battle. The story traces Joan's life from the time she first became inspired to go into service of her country through her ordeal at the stake. Jose Ferrer made his film debut in this epic as the wishywashy Dauphin who doublecrossed Joan and brought about her downfall, The whole thing is in technicolor, with a high measure of historical accuracy.
