Day of Prayer
Local Groups to Join in Worldwide Event Friday
The Indianapolis Council of Churchwomen will World Day of Prayer worship and Holy Communion service for the entire city Friday at 1:15 p. m. in the Carrollton Avenue Evangelical and Reformed Church. District prayer services are scheduled for the forenoon and evening of Prayer Day in all parts of the city. Women of 92 countries around the world on Friday will join in
prayer for lasting peace and’ for|
strengthening the bonds of Chris; tian unity. They will stress the
theme, “Perfect Love Casts Out| . Pear,” chosen by German women
to highlight this year’s’ services. Women of a different country select the Prayer Day theme annually. The prayer, first spoken by the Christian women of the Fiji Islands, ‘30 miles east of the International’ Date Line, will be echodd in hundreds of languages and dialects around the world. The closing petition will sound in the cold of Alaska and the tropic warmth of Tonga Island in the Southwest Pacific. Se The first Friday of Lent always fs set apart for the World Day pf Prayer. Half the offering taken in the prayer services in Indianapolis and elsewhere will go to the Home Missions Council for work among the American Indians, sharecroppers and migrants. The other half will swell the treasury of the Foreign Missions Conference. Ald Foreign Students Through the funds Christian literature will find its way to missionary countries; aid will go to the Committee on Friendly Relations among Foreign Students in America; and for the education of Christian leaders in interdenomjnational Christian colleges in the Orient. Mrs. Dorsey D. King, president of the Indianapolis Council of Churchwomen, will speak at the United Communion Service on “One Lord, One Faith.” Mrs, Marcelite Smith will sing “The Lord's Prayer” by Malotte and the Women's Fellowship Choir also will give numbers, Mrs. E. Methodists Set
Seek to Enroll 20,000 Hoosiers
Methodists of the Indianapolis District will attend a mass meeting Feb. 11 to promote the enrollment of 20,000 Hoosiers in the denomination’ 8 1 prehes during Lent. 3 Dr. G. Ernest Thomas, head of the Methodist Spiritual Life Department, Nashville, Tenn. will give the address for the giant meeting at 2:30 p. m. in the Roberts Park Methodist Church. Dr. Thomas is the author of a series of articles titled “Faith Can Master Fear” which are appearing each Sunday in The Times. The coming mass meeting is part of the Methodist Lenten Advance in which 355,000 church members in Indiana will co-oper-ate. Dr. Sumner L. Martin, district superintendent, will preside at the meeting. Tomorrow, Bishop Richard C. Raines will start the advance with radio addresses on eight Hoosier stations. He will speak on “To Christians in Troubled Times” on the various broadcasts including one over WIBC at 9:45 p. m.
