Certain to Seek ‘Expanded’ Program By MERRIMAN SMITH United Press White House Reporter WASHINGTON, Dec. 27— President Truman will ask Congress for an “expanded” and higher tax program next year to meet mounting defense costs in countering Communist aggression, it was announced today. The request for new taxes probably will go to Congress a “few weeks” after the new 82d Congress convenes on Jan. 3, a high {source said. White House Press Secretary Joseph Short said Mr. Truman would make his tax recommenda-

time.” Matter of Timing Mr. Short said last night that he “doubted very much” that the President would make any requests for new taxes immediately after the new Congress convened. But it was obvious that the request for new taxes was a matter of timing. The request for the new taxes will be submitted after the Congress receives the State of the Union Message and the budget from Mr, Truman. He is now working on them. It is reported that the budget will provide for spending about $75 billion in fiscal 1952, chiefly for the Armed Forces. Mr. Short declined to answer other questions about details of the new tax program. Asked whether the President's new recommendations would in{clude a hike in personal income itaxes, Mr. Short declined to com- | ment. No Change Whatsoever’ A government official said, however, that there had been a misinterpretation of some of Mr. Short's remarks last night and there is “no change whatsoevef in the necessity for additional taxes or the intention of the President to ask for them.” He said that while the new tax program would go to Congress a “few weeks after it convenes on Jan. 3, there is less urgency in getting a tax measure to Congress after the first of the year than there was during the lame duck session. He said Mr. Truman will assure the public of his desire to pay as much as possible of the cost of the defense program as we go along.

‘Evidently Santa Claus Was Responsible

The spirit of Christmas prevailed over the week-end, and children throughout the city were “good little tykes.” That was the report from Juvenile Court today after a holiday week-end in which only one case was referred to the court. “From five to eight children are referred to us on an average week-end, Chief Probation Officer Charles Boswell said today. The one case was that of a 13-year-old girl who had run away from home because, “my daddy and mummy don’t like me.” Her father is 70, and her mother 38. Her only Christmas gift came after she was admitted at the juvenile center. She was given perfume and a box of cosmetics she said, “I'm so proud.”
