Year's Jockey Honors |
Young Rider Now Only Four Wins Behind Joe Culmone’s Record of 371 in '50
NEW YORK, Dec. 23.—(UP)
— Young Willie Shoemaker moved |
another step closer to Joe Culmone in their exciting battle for the _ national jockey championship when he accounted for one winner
out of four mounts today at the
Fairgrounds.
Shoemaker won the second race at the New Orleans track with Play Again, who paid $13.40 straight. It was his 387th ‘Winner of
the year, four less than Culmong, who failed to win with five mounts today at Tropical Park. In the seventh race at-the Fairgrounds, Shoemaker just missed another winner when his mount, 'Pat-the-Pilot, was nosed out’ by! Ray Count Miss. However, his one winner helped extend an amazing streak for the mighty little Tex-! an, who has not been blanked since his arrival at the Fairgrounds from the West Coast last Monday. In five days of racing there, he has had 10 winners—an average of two a day. Yuletide Winner Pictus was the winner of the $5000 Yuletide Handicap at the Fairgrounds, while the Sam E Wilson entry of Bugledrums and Royal Mustang finishéd second and third, respectively. Well back during the early running, Pictus swung into high gear in the stretch and reached the wire a length and a quarter ahead of Bugledrums. The winner was clocked in 1:07 1/5 for five-and-a-half furlongs and jald $8.80 to win. In the $5000 Governor Warren. Handicap at Tropical, _ Crystal

Boot surprised 9,055 ‘fans by charging to a two-length victory! over Brookmeade Stable's Blue Hills. Sunglow, a stablemate of Blue Hills and ridden by Culmone, wound up third in a field of | nine. Ridden by Wall Nick Wall turned "in a frontrunning ride aboard Crysfal Boot, urging the four-year-old chestnut colt into command shortly after the start and keeping him there to the end of the mile-and-a-six-teenth route, Crystal Boot displayed amazing - speed as he turned the distance in 1:42 4/5, just two-fifths of a second off the track record. The Brookmeade entry was the odds-on choice in the betting.
| Blue Hills ran second most of the
way, but failed to threaten Crystal Boot. Culmone simply waited too long with Sunglow. He got the colt running in the stretch, swinging around the field, but arrived too late to catch the winner, Crystal Boot paid $60.00 to win. | Wall completed a riding “double” in the next race when he won the Dervish at $7 90 straight.
