Experience the best teacher? - THe career of J. Ralph Fenstermaker, presidentelect of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, is a potent argument fo this age-old debate. Forty-three years ago, he was a 16-year-old high school graduate in Dayton, O. His father: insisted he was too young to go away to college. He should get more age and ‘experience first. Today, he is the president of three corporations doing an annual volume of more than $8
And, he just never has had time to carry out his original college plans. * © ¢ THE STORY of Mr. Fenstermaker’s career is @¢ a typical Horatio Alger story. Son of a veteran Dayton schoolman, Mr. Fenstermaker started taking a bookkeeping and secretarial course after graduating from high Within a short time he had become a regular bank employee and had been in on the organization of an insurance company. By the time he was 19, he had saved nearly $2000 to carry out his plans to take a liberal arts course at Miami University in Ohio, to be followed by a law course at Harvard. But opportunity knocked. He answered. * oo
HIS SISTER'S husband, the .late Hugh J. Baker, suggested that a potential big future lay In the manufacture of metal “building materials
here in Indianapolis.
So, Mr. Fenstermaker took his college savings and invested them into a partnership with his
brother-in-law,
- Today that partnership has grown into three affiliated Indianapolis corporations—Hugh J. Baker & Co., steel fabricators; Baker Forms Co., manufacturers of forms for shaping con- ' crete, and Baker-Roos, Inc., producers of metal scaffolds and other essentials te the construc-
tion industry.
And Mr. Fenstermaker is boss of a staff of more than 150 persons—most of them are technical men with college degrees. * oo LIKE MOST persons with unusual names, Mr. Fenstermaker has seen all varities of spellings

‘Back in 1732, when his ancestor came to America from North Germany, the family name spelled Fenstermacher.

Oddly enough, Mr. “Windowmaker” makes no windows. But his firm is distributor for one of the larger manufacturers of steel-encased win-
dows.
