With the heip of Civil Air Patrol, high school youngsters now can get an early start toward eventual possession of a pilot's license. And, with the co-operation of Civil Air Patrol pilots, they can take “orientation flights” regularly, although they are barred from taking the stick and are not given actual flying instruction, It is all accomplished through a nation-wide program, established by CAP, with the backing of the U. 8S. DAVID, now commanding officer of the Shortridge flight, has been a CAP cadet for a year and two months. During that time, he hasn't missed a single Sunday staff meeting at Schoen Field, Ft. Harrison, where CAP planes are based. With 18 hours of “orientation flight time” under his seat belt, David likes flying so much he can hardly wait until his turn at the stick. David's ambition is to join the U. 8S. Air Force. He would like to be admitted as soon as he is graduated from high school, but admits, regretfully,
| that the college requirements
for admission to Air Force pilot training probably will keep him busy in the classroom for a while, Then there is Carol West, Shortridge senior, who is senior assistant commanding officer, and Sandra Jordan, whose father is a pilot. J - ~ » »

Mr. Hilliker flew fighter planes in Africa with the 15th Air Command while the Air Force was still the Air Corps. His knowlege of aviation made him logical choice to lead the 20-odd cadet pupils at Shortridge through the mysteries of flight. A CAP-issued textbook covers such things as aerodynamics, meteorology, navigation, plane engines, military procedure and flight tactics. The book is studied at home and discusséd in one two-hour class each Tuesday afternoon.
Older CAP members believe the cadet program will be of immense value in young America on the values and responsibilities of aviation,
as well as an incentive to take |
pilot training as soon as age
and finances permit. Cadets agree the program is
sound. But they have even bet- |
ter reason for joining. It's interesting—and enjoyable—and the uniforms are | swell.
