Reporters’ Score Almost Perfect as
Sentiment Samplers By NOBLE REED The series of house-to-house surveys on voting trends conducted by Times reporters before the Nov. 7-election reflected a fairly
accurate picture of how the public was thinking,
This was disclosed this week! in a check of the official election returns from those specific areas.
In a survey of the Tth precinct, 20th ward in the northeastern section of Indianapolis, a heavy Republican area, Times Reporter Edward Wilson reported last October the voters indicated a heavier GOP majority than usual with some Democrats voting Republican. Official’ election returns for, that precinct showed a GOP ma-| ‘jority of 541, an increase of 154 over the party's majority in the 1948 election. The total Demo-| cratic vote was 11 less than in| 1948, showing a wiley of voters | to the GOP.

Adams two weeks before the election showed the attitude of |, the voters there had changed very! little since 1948. But there was some indication, Reporter Adams noted, that a few Democrats, might change over to the GOP, Official returns from that precinct showed the Democratic majority there was 379, down 40 votes from the 1948 Democratic majority. The Republican tally there was up 27 votes over 1948 while the Democratic total was up only 13 over two years ago, indicating a slight switch of some Democratic voters,
A survey for several days in Johnson County, usually a fairly evenly divided section between Democrats and Republicans was made by Times Reporter Leon W. Russell last October, It showed the voters didn't appear as stirred up over political issues this year

Question Answéred
However, the survey disclosed that the big question mark in Johnson County was the voting trend among a large bloc of independent voters who said at that time they didn't know how they were going to vote. Official returns show the turnout at the polls this year was 148 less than in 1948, bearing out the pre-election survey picture. However, the Republican majority this year in Johnson County was 587 votes over the crats compared to a slim GOP majority of 65 votes in 1948. This was the answer to the question of how ' most of. the independent
