- Shorn of Elegance By ELIZABETH TOOMEY
United Press Staff Correspondent
NEW YORK, Dec. 8—The crit-
fecal world situation won't affect the style of women's clothes much, but it may bring a quick end to elegant lounging clothes and luxurious fabrics, Hollywood designer Marusia says.
“The newest styles already are
the very slim skirts and shorter hemlines just like that 1-85 rule! or whatever it was during the last war” Marusia explained during a visit here to show her new gpring collection. 8he gestured toward the black velvet lounging slacks and the guilted gold lame jacket she was wearing saying, “These will be foolish.” : : i She already favors short evesince “men don’t like to wear a black tie.” 1 She disappeared into the bedroom to show what she meant by a probable change in fabrics which is facing American women: “Shme. of theses beautiful imported mataria's have just become
goailnh'a this vear, but they will dinaprear sgaie. If we. continue with war” she, said. emerging
in a natural linen dress embroid ered in 14-karat gold and tiny pearls. “This fabric comes from Switzerland, but already the price {8 going up four and five dollars a vard for things like this.” One of her new short evening dresses, cut with a short, tight skirt and an added puff of material over one hip, is made of silver lame and white satin checks. “I noticed that store buyers are picking more of tha slim silhouets, both for daytime and evening clothes,” Marusia said. “1 think we are gradually preparing women for more simple clothes.” The blonde, Polish-born degigner, who models all her own designs, learned the hard way this fall not to try to anticipate a solution to the world situation. “I was in Paris in October and designed a dress from a special fabric of red and blue with white stripes, 1 called it ‘Victory in Korea.’ ” Marusia = sald sadly. “Now I just call it ‘Victory' |
