Nightmare Valley— Marines Fight To Escape Trap Frozen Chinese Bodies Attest Strength of Perimeter Being Held

“By FRED

WITH 1ST MARINE DIVISION IN HAGARU-RI, Dec. 7 (CDN)—The road for survival for this Marine division and some Army outfits leads south from this broken, primitive

Oriental village.

It runs south along a nightmare valley of narrow, wind- | ing road through enemy-blocked mountain passes.

Savage Chinese asses now occupy high ground overlooking the gauntlet. _- They will try to capture the hill.

along the line of which our young men must march this gauntlet.

OUR FORCES | here hold rough- | ly an oval-shaped perimeter. foe is all around. We are mag-| nificently dug in and heavily armed. Incredible numbers of Chinese bodies grotesquely frozen in the snow testify to the present eveflisiency of our defenses. Reunited inside the oval the Marines now nurse back to fighting health their units which were isolated in tHe Arctic hills north of Hagarau-Ri for several heartbreaking days. The individual and collective efforts these cut-off units made to consolidate must wait until a! calmer day for the full telling. . When told they will be irrevo-| cably etched in the mind-—-and conscience—of the American] people. = ® 5

THE ETCHING will show frostbitten boys slipping, falling and| dying—but fighting through vast-| ly greater foe, dragging out their dead and wounded by hand, by! jeep, by oxcart. We can but pray that the path ahead will be less charged with such ordeal, But be it as it may it] shall be tried with resolution by the United States Marines. Here are some of the things I. saw and heard today inside the oval: Marine engineers have pounded out a washboard strip. Every 15 minutes a ‘-C-47 takes out the wounded and brings in replacements. Incomer (Pfc.) Andrew Jackson, 21, Jacksonville, Fla., holds | 34 Christmas cards received from homeiown . students—at Andrew Jackson High School. His artillery! battery was cu* off south of here and he returned by air. » ” 5 A YOUNG lieutenant sits on the floor of his tent covered with! straw mats. Sleeping kids take up. every inch of the warm floor. He says: “They're trying to catch | up sleep for the walk ahead. My

feet are covered with frostbilte blisters. I was going to sick bay

but when I saw the others . . . well, we can’t spare a man.” - The oval is on one-third alert night and day. One third of the Marines watch that perimeter. Others put out. cautious feelers down the road-for-survival-—as

damn much. . Every Marine I meet wants to now, “how hard will the road back be? Do the people back home ‘knew what we've been through? —this is a terrible thing for the Marines to retreat. Will we all be going to Japan?” ! Now tjere might be some ner-| vousness - worried desire to] start the march .... let's go. Do not for a second translate that into the slightest quiver of fear. The current mission has been “selected by the turn of levents—both political and military—and even the most polit{ically disinterested lad knows {the road back will be but the beginning of the eventual road {forward. Or, as one said: “Gee— {we're just like the Limmeys . . . iget the stuffings knocked out of use at the beginning.”
