THE CURRENT supply and demand of blood at the hospital was unknown to me so I called Dr. Rosenbaum. I also mentioned that he ought to be happy with Post 6572, Sometimes transportation can be a problem. . Dr. Rosenbaum was pleased. But he had a problem. Subsequently (only a couple of days later), we were’ talking in’ his office. He said the need for blood at the VA hospital is pretty stabilized. : monthly period is 350 pints. One-hundred pints a month go to Billings Hospital at Ft. Harrison. - “An appeal to the public for blood donations sometimes presents a problem,” said Dr. Rosenbaum, “We get a terrific response and find we

safe to keep blood more than three weeks.” : : After a period of plenty, explained Dr. Rosenbaum, often there is a dangerous drop in supply and he really begins to worry. ® © ¢ . “IF THERE was some way to keep the supply as constant as the demand, the situation would be ideal,” sighed the doctor. “I don’t want to create an impression, however, that would jeopardize public response.” His dilemma is greatest when he has to turn donors down. And that has happened in the past when volunteer organizations solicited large groups to donate blood. A few weeks later he would be more than glad to have even a small percentage of donors coming to the blood bank. He suggests that all persons interested in giving a pint of blood contact the Red Cross, which is doing a fine job in trying to maintain a balance. . : > & & AT THE PRESENT TIME the blood bank at the Cold Spring Rd. hospital is down to 100 pints. MIAMI, Nov. 20—A Saturda¥ afternoon radio program has been going in-Miami since Apr. 16, 1949, over 13 stations, including one in Ft. Lauderdale and Key West. It is called “Crime: The Sinister Blot.”

It originated at Station WKAT, owned by’

Frank Katzentine, one of the spearheads of the Miami crime , ~o( ; cleanup. It opens with a rattle °° 4 Nh : . i ar - of machine guns and the zing of — ,;;~ ms - (A=\o °

bullets. Its aim is to expose a fresh crook every week-end. This NZ is done by Dan Sullivan, an ex- a [ FBI man who now directs the £3 GH Miami Crime Commission. Nr

When” the program first went on the air Katzentine was unable "to employ radio actors, who were afraid to risk their necks. . Sulli-

K

- van, Col. Frank Merritt, former-

ly of the SHAEF staff, Katzentine and John Prosser, vice president of- WKAT, became amateur actors on the show. : fal After, they were hammered by threats. Many long-time members of the underground against Miami crime still remain #nonymous. A heavy life insurance policy has been taken out for Director Sullivan, who has 11 children. Threats against all known members of the commission have continued—not only anonymous hints of violence, but carefully conducted smear campaigns. &

SOME OF MIAMI'S best citizens and businessmen were not happy at this insisterice on crime in their midst. As an exceedingly civic-:minded community, Miami and Miami Beach resist any honest bluntness that might chase off a tourist, Katzentine, Sullivan and Co. were accused of fouling their own nest. 3 But the programs went on, as did detailed crime coverage by both rival newspapers, - the Herald and the News. For once, co-operation was complete by competitors. 5 a As money was needed, lawyer Katzentine cheerfully shook down his friends and allies. Air time for the 13 stations was donated. Only ore ' Miami station failed to join in. That was Station

All persons donating blood today will receive a card from the Red Cross. On the card will be the name of the donor and his blood type. This card will be billfold size and it is recommended that every person carry one. In the event of an accident precious minutes can be saved when emergency transfusions are necessary.- > IT'S MOST discouraging to witness all the work that must be done for veterans of past wars, to have an inkling of what remains to be done when the present Korean War is taking such a heavy toll of American fighting men. But I guess most of u§ will have to sit tight, work, and step up and give our time and blood when the need is there. Today is such a day.
