Play for Big Hand May Pay Over Playing for Quick Out
By OSWALD JACOBY WHEN YOUR hand is set up for a quick out, it is pretty good policy to meld right away and play for that quick out. If you can succeed in going out before the opponents meld at all, you will gain from 800 to 1200 points depefitng on how many red threes
appear.

4 | Harry and I ddenr’t-blame him.
He held two jokers and one was | already in the discard pile. Of ! course someone else might have | the count anyway but there was a good chance that his opponents would not have 120 or { anything like {t. * Therefore, | Harry drew from the stock, and promptly discarded one of his three kinds. Incidentally, his | draw happened. to be a second
seven, so he held three low | pairs. It Works HARRY'S right hand op-
ponent discarded a king at his first play. Without batting’ an eye Harry drew from the stock. He had started for a big hand
and was not going to take the
discard pile until it had really ‘grown. Furthermore he hoped
| that enough kings would get
into the pile so that when he ‘did take it he would have a nat“ural canasta in kings. = _ I am not so sure that I approve of this second play. However it worked beyond his fondest hopes, ‘aithough afterwards Harry admitted that he became distinctly nervous before he finally got the discard pile.
