WOULDN'T be correct to say “Pat” Barton , for excitement in his youth. Nor Bry it be correct to say he went out of his way
Things just : ot Word War II be served in both = Army and Navy, coming home without a scratch. He completed a stiff tour of duty _ With the Indiana state police, where fate set him "up once or twice for a ‘possible “coup,” but then relented. “ He even helped create a flurry of excitement when he was born Mar. 7, 1915, in St. ¥incent’s Hospital. He was a member of the first set of . twins born there.

: 4 ¢ © NOT THAT Patrick J. Barton, newly appointed city controller, looks on these thifigs as important. But they are part of the Barton picture of contrasts. In his office the new controller speaks quietly, and his poise belies the spark of humor in his eves. He has not underestimated the task of picking up the reins of the 50 million fiscal city. He expects to parallel the policies of Mayor Bayt inthe administration of his office. > % BACK IN THE DAYS when young “Pat’ w: in grade school. his major objective seemed to be avoiding that institution. School authorities and his parents opened a concerted drive-to keep him in class. He admits that his fathér's record and the scholastic achievements of his nine brothers and sisters are probably all that saved him from being branded “incorrigible.” It was in his senior high school year that he allowed a thirst for an education to grasp him. That's when he felt the first inclination to become an attorney Mr. Barton's legal traifiing started after he’ was 21. and already a member of the state police. After graduating from Cathedral High School he attended Butler University and Indiana Law School. where he received his LLB degree. > © o OUT OF 500 applicants, Pat Barton was one of 50 successful applicants for police duty. An __older brother; John, preceded him in the state police ranks and is "now a captain. > © TROOPER BARTON made a smistake that could have been his last one. With a partner he had forced a car to stop after it was identified as one driven by a fugitive. Grasping his rifle, he walked behind the fugitive’s car and up to the front seat. His partner approached from the driver's side. Officer Barton peered through the window and saw a 38-caliber pistol in the driver's lap. Before it could be used, Mr. Barton yanked open the door and thrust the muzzle of his rifle inside the car. The fugitive climbed out meekly and surrendered his gun: The weak point in this operation was discovered back at headquarters. Pat had forgotten to load the rifle.

® ¢ 9 AS HE STUDIED he often used the Supreme Court library for reference work, and applied to the court for appointment as assistant librarian when the opening occurred. The pay. was less than the police salary, but the legal training was ideal. Later he became deputy attorney general here.

OPERATING a major corporation, which is the job of the city controller, doesn’t leave too much time for recreation.
