Plexiglass dome spotlights dining table.

By JEAN TABRBERT SPACIQUS, yet just a single room. That's the nushell desc ription of an Indianapolis house with an architectural claim to
greatness.
Designed by William Wright and Alfred Porteus,
the home
was planned for a family who wagted tontemporary design along
with privacy and convenience. The owners got all three plus & more basic way of life, simplified down to the last detail. Starting at the entrance, the architects play distinctive tricks. They've created an intimate feeling by planting ferns and other greenery outside, then continuing them indoors. Glass alone interrupts the continuity, To the left of the entrance is the study-guest living = area. Wooden pegs, made of straightgrained fir from which the interior and exterior of the house is built, hold guests’ wraps.
Plexiglass Dome OPENING UP from the hall Is the larger living-dining-kitch-en area. Above the dining table is a plexiglass dome, built #0 the owner, whose hobby is astronomy, can “see stars” effortlessly. He'll be able to pick an orchid at his elbow, too. Soon the Breenhouse just outside the livAng area will be filled 4kith them.

Ordinary materials, ingeniously used, stand out everywhere. Highlight is a three-sided fireplace of Brown County stone. The huge copper hood, a conversation piece, conceals fresh air ducts, “allowing for free circulation of air throughout the house. Built-in bookshelves contribute to the decor, add warmth. Flagstone floor 18 constructed of the same material as the fireplace. A dropped panel, designed like an egg crate from plywood serves as a hood to pull out Kitchen odors, defines the area. Quarry tile, the tvpe used in barns, lines the bath. Its color blends right in with the mono chromatic brown scheme of the house, The only hinged door house shields the bath. i= maintained elsewhere with sliding doors that fold fngide the walls in three sections and traverse arrangements of brown

Kitchen Poses Problem THE KITCHEN posed a knotty problem. How to keep it in harmony with the rest of the house, still utilize modern white enamel labor-saving equipment?
A master camouflage job did the trick. The fir used throughout the house was laid in horizontal strips to form drawers for kitchen utensils, silver, etc. To the right of the drawers is a concealed dishwasher, next a garbage disposal unit. These doors have vertical strips to
vary the facade. 2 : At the far right of the lineup are four more drawers stainless’ steel lined -- which form the icebox. A glance at the 11'; cubic feet of storage space tells the homemaker the condition of her food supply. On top of the unit is an elec-
tric range and a sink, The oven is built into the side of of the fireplace.

Lights and Shadows
THE LIGHT and shadow arrangement in the house delights the occupants. Spot lighting overhead is used for. normal activities. At night a master switch turns on a flood of yard lights, masterfully concealed at strategic positions in the trees, With candlelight inside, the outdoor lighting .is all that's necessary for conversational evenings. The plexiglass dome, by concentrating the light during the day and at night, works a 24-hour schedule, Picture windows open only on pictures, are used generously. Tiny greenhouse has glass panes slanted to catch the sun,
In bedroom area, windows are ‘ket high so privacy is complete. Contributing much to the,

Cart Series
PLANNED FOR the future is a series of carts to be stored beneath the ledge and the laundry facilities. These will be especially designed to hold cleaning supplies and other groups of household articles, Furniture pieces not built-in are on, rollers. These include the dining table and a threepoint shaped one in front of the living area couches. The rollers make them flexible enough to roll to the kitchen area for table setting, then back t6 wherever the meal is to be. * Overhang all around . the house is engineered to regulate the solar radiation. Disappearing fence outlining lot will be further blocked out with evergreens. Master of the household has arranged vegetable" beds in 10x16-inch squares with acid, semi-acid and nonacid soil content.
