A new kind of Air Travel is in the making
New Navy engine-soon to undergo first tests in civilian (ransport -promises smoother. faster. quieter, more pleasant air travel
y/o short time the first American commercial airliner ever to be powered by turbine engines will be delivered to the Allison Division of General Motors.
The power plants in this Convair are new Allison Model “501” Turbo-Props— commercial of the Navy 138. They are geared to a new highperformance propeller especially designed and built for high-engine-power characteristics by the Acroproducts Division of General Motors.

The “5017 is lighter, smaller, smoother and quieter than any other propeller-type engine of equal horsepower —and much more efficient than a jet, up to near-sonic speeds.
Dev eloped for miliary use, the Allison Turbo- Pron engine with Aerbproducts Propellers has already set new performance targets in multi-engine air:
XPSY flying boat and also in a high-performance, carrier-based Navy attack plane, the XA2D. So the next step is to adapt this new type of power to commercial use.

The Allison T38 Turbo-Prop Engine develops 2,750 horsepower, yet weighs only 1,250 pounds — 2.2 horsepower . forevery pound of weight. This is more than twice the power per pound of weight developed by the best recipro-
cating type aviation engines used ‘in World War II.
But in the Turbo-Prop, as the diagram shows, the turbineis connected through a drive shaft and reduction gears to a special type Aeroprop ‘Propeller. Air enters the compressor, which feeds it under high pressure into the combustion chamber, where it is mixed with. fuel and ignited. The thrust of this hot gas drives the turbine which generates the power to operate both compressor and propeller. The small amount of energy remaining in the
