But when he can walk, he hopes to go back to mountain climbing David, a 21-year-old student at Stanford University, answered an ad this summer for volunteers to make an assauit on Yerupaja, highest -unscaled peak in the Western hemisphere Three Drop Out The six-than party, led by George. ‘Bell, Cornell instructor, and James Maxwell, of Braintree Mass., worked their way up the base of the mountain and built a base camp at 18500 feet. There three of them dropped out: Harrah, Bell and Maxwell went on to a tiny ledge a few thousand feet below the summit After three attempts. Mr. Harrah and Mr. Maxwel] went on alone, battling their way ridge to conquer the peak But the mountain wasn't ready
to give in. even after thev had made. it. On the ticklish. descent & from the summit, they stopped : for a minute in a “safe” place to
take a picture. The snow cornice on which Mr. Harrah was stand ing slipped into a 2000-foot abyss Mr. Harrah went after it

Mr, Harrah never touched it “T've got to get used to going up and down. stairs,” he said. “I've got to learn to use these,” he added, pointing to his bandaged feet “As it is, the doctors say it will be two” vears before I can climb again.” But after that, he expects to find more mountains to conquer,

is the Army paying for medical care for dependents?
A. The Army has made no plans vet for allowing dependents to go
to Japan. When the Army's medical services are available for dependents they are provided.
The Army is not paying for medical care under any other circum-
stances. - Q. You wrote in a recent column that high school boys in the National Guard would be left in school if their units were - called $e active duty. My son was in high school and got in the Guard without his parents’ consent. And when the order came for his group to go on active duty they took him. We Tive in Tennessee. and I wrote the State Adjutant General ask‘ng him to not take our son. He said there was nothing he could do about it. Is there? A. It is obvious that the Tennessee Adjutant General, like
gh those in other states, has chosen I to ignore ‘the general policy laid
the Pentagon on this And unfortunately there
down by matter.
“isn’t much to be done about it.

objector? A. You'll have to get religion in an awful hurry and convince the draft board of your sincerity. If you don't "explain your conscientious objections to serving your country in the first questionnaire it’s ikely that your board
‘will be pretty dubious about your
change. But don’t let that discourage you. A. lot of guys in Korea got some conscientious objections to war overnight, Only they didn’t have the chance to get out as is furnished you. Q. I am interested in enlisting in the Air Force nursing corps. I have a son 6 years old, but I
too. -
legal guardian of the child, will 1 be free to enlist? A. The Air Force provides this answer: “Females who have a dependent - or dependents under 18 vears of age or a child or children under 18 years of age are not eligible to apply for appointment under the provisions of the regulations. The fact that the applicant does not have legal custody of the child or children will not remove this disqualification.” Q. When I was in service a few years ago my father got in an accident and lost his arm. was discharged to help take care of the family. Does. this mean that I have to give a certain amount of time or part of my salary to the support of my parents? And how long does this obligation last? ~ A. There is no obligation on your part, other than a moral one, to keep supporting your parents or to give them a part of your salary. | Q. Can an inactive naval reservist apply for active duty and be accepted? A. Absolutely. If they need you and you pass the physical you're in. ; Q. Our 18-year-old Philippine hpuseboy has registered for the draft. Fe was with us for many vears including-a period of internment by the Japs. He has a half year to go to finish high school and we would like him to continue on to college. Do you | think he will® get-a deferment? When is the best time to ask for one? A. If he is physically fit there doesn’t appear to be any grounds for deferment. Thete might he a question of his citizenship. You should have requested his deferment when he filled out his questionnaire. |
