‘Strong Man’ Role

COLUMBUS, O., Nov. 8 (UP)— Sen. Robert A. Taft emerged from Ohio’s election today as the leader in: the 1952 GOP Presidential field by virtue of the voters’ support of his condemnation of President Truman's policies.

The re-election,. of Bén Taft, called the “Mr. Republican”:

“|shored up the sagging bulwarks

{of Republican Party con atism.,

The second of Ohlo’s Big two, Democratic Gov. Frank J. Lausche, emerged as the “strong man” of his party in the Midwest by his third-term win. No. 1 Target

. Sen. Taft and Gov. Lausche won despite opposition of the United Labor League.

Sen. Taft had been marked the {No. 1 purge target for his authorjsnip of, the Taft-Hartley Labor Law and oppcsition to the Democratic program. Gov. Lausche was called a traitor by labor when he refused openly to indorse Taft's opponent.

{ The re-election of Sen. Taft by {a smashing 314,000-odd votes ree {moved the chief obstacle to his {presidential chances — the argument that he had no political sex appeal. The Labor-Democrat can|didate, State Auditor Joseph T. {Ferguson, conceded defeat and {surprise at 2:15 a. m. 17 Sen. Taft, Who had charged {President Truman and the CIO|PAC with wanting a Congress jof- “stooges” to enact a ‘“Labor|Socialist” program, made hay where he wasn’t supposed to. He

{sailed into labor's big-city dens-

{in his campaign and came out with no bruises.

Attacked ‘Isolationism’ The Taft attack on the nationlat administration also extended jto foreign policy. He charged President Truman's “isolationist” | policies bred the Korean War and

the threat of a major war tn the {Far East.

The Senator, however, said the

recent reverses in Korea had little {to do with the election results. {He declared that his victory was a national one for the Republican Party and an expression of “overwhelming confidence in the GOP program.”
