The battle to get an oak in the large open area of the park, ‘facing Meridian 8t., began last —Mar. 21, the first day of spring. We haven't had much luck. State Forester Joe DeYoung, if you remember helped (that means he did all the work) plant eight acorns. We hoped a mighty oak from an acorn would grow. At that time I had a eampaign going to boost Indianapolis. . Mayor Feeney gave us permission to plant acorns in the park. Joe and I were sure that, the acorns would some day help beautify our city. We marked the spot where Joe placed the acorns with a granite marker.

SPRING RAINS came, the sun made the earth warm and one fine day a tiny leaf poked through ‘the soil. An oak grew in University

Park. Joe and I were so happy | we almost bought

—Cigars—to—pass—out-to—friends= Then, ping, ping and ping, we nad four little oaks. Squirrels dug up two “expanding acorns and we had two little oaks left. Four acorns: refused to co-operate. One day Tree No. 3 suddenly tiered up’ its leaves and died. Joe and I were frantic. We swore ' to-keep one Little’ Oakie going, Wire hoops went around the tree. During dry spells I hauled water. I even got a bag of fertilizer. Just before leaving for my vacation in July, Little Oakie had 14 leaves and was doing well. The caretaker in the park assured me he would keep an eye on the little fellow and water him.

A cou PLE of days after my return, I paid a visit to Little Oakie. Tragedy. All the signs Indicated someone had pinched him off just below the [ast leaf. He would never grow up to be a mighty oak. He was deader than a toothpick. Joe was burned up.. I was more sad than teed off. Friends sent sympathy cards and urged another planting. Joe vowed we'd have an oak in University Park. We didn't have any more. acorns. And you can’t transplant > seedlings in the ‘middle of summer. Joe adVised patience. Next fall we'll have a “real tree in the park or else,” said Joe. “Victor MaGee, superintendent of the Morgan‘Monroe State Forest, followed our oak troubles and was ready to help. I didn't know that at the time.

THE. OTHER day Joe called and said he “=

to make a trip to Morgan-Monroe Forest. Joe also said Mr. \MaGee promised to dig up. one of . his -strongest- young oaks, Joe would haul’ it to Indianapolis. : “When I get back we're going to have a planting party,” roared Joe. He ‘brought a 415-foot white oak, leaves, big ball of dirt around the\roots and all. Mr. MaGee fixed Joe up with a Back of rich woods soil,

For the planting ceremony, I brought a sack of treated fertilizer. We dug’ like a couple of ground moles. The topsoil in University Park is pretty good but when you get down about six inches you think you're digging through. concrete. - Concrete with nails, wire, hunks of cinder.

> ON THE BOTTOM of the pit Joe phured a layer of Morgan-Monroe soil. Then he poured the treated fertilizer.” Next came a good drenching with water. The oak was set and a mixture of Morgan-Monroe soil and fertilizer was tamped around the roots.

Joe stomped on the dirt, going around and around like an Indian. My job was to haul water from the gasoline station across the street. Unless it rains good and hard, I'm to keep the roots of the oak wet. Gad, I hope we have luck with this tree. Too bad we couldn't have started with an acorn as planned. No, somebody shad to clip Little Qakie in two.” Why, I'll. never know. “All trees are 5 rmant now,” Joe said, -we won't know good job tog We're going to have a lot of nasty weather before the first buds start popping open. I have confidence that Mother Nature will do her part next spring. If Human Nature will only give the oak half a chance, we'll all be able to sit under Big Oakie’s shade next summer. We'll have to do-it one at a time, true, but.it won't be long before a mighty oak stands and only asks to be a friend.
