The last report from the physician Just before 7 a. m. said his “pulse has grown fainter and
the king seems to be very weak.”| Gustav V, king of Sweden, was!
a monarch in a Socialist state. To many persons who knew nothing of his governmental reforms, he was the elongated ten-nis-playing king whose picture. was often found on the sports pages of the world's press. He was an amazing specimen of physical fitness, Virtually all his life he had engaged in athletic competition. A : Entered Army King Gustav was born on June 16, 1858, at the royal palace of Drottningholm. He was the son of King Oscar II and Queen Sophia,
He entered the army at an early age and later enrolled at the University of Upsala. In 1898, he was made a general in both the Swedish and Norwegian armies. On Dec. 8, 1907, upon the death of his father, he became King of Sweden. He had married a German princess, Sofia Maria Victoria, ot Baden, only daughter of the Grand Duke Frederick, on Sept. 20, 1881. That union brought three sons, one of whom later died, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The Kking’s popularity rose steadily during his reign, chiefly because he kept Sweden out of two world wars. “My Dear Branting” The anomaly of a king in a Socialist state is perhaps explained by the close relationship
prime minister, Hjalmor Branting, father of Swedish socialism and a pillar of the Socialist International. : Mr. Branting kept a‘ photograph of his sovereign on his desk. It was inscribed: “To my dear Branting from his devoted] Gustav.” The king's picture was flanked! by two others—one of them of Karl Marx.
As youngsters, the king and Branting had been classmates at school. At the time Stockholm “was astounded by the boy prince's enrollment in a school where he would rub shoulders with “all kinds of boys.” 4
Since then, it has become thei—
tradition of . the Swedish royal house: All its members go to school in exactly the same way as the humblest citizens. Later they serve apprenticeships, not only in the armed forces and in government departments, but even in business. y
