. The stage is 6 feet wide and 6 feet deep. Costume changes are made in the boiler room. One spotlight and about 40 feet of electric cord provides lighting effects, Last year a student equipped with a light bulb and shade and color filters directed the lighting on top of a ladder from the rear of the room. Things are picking up. _ An old phonograph, the tall type that looks like a refrigerator, is the main prop. At different times, the phonograph was a bar, fireplace, piano, judge's bench, park bench, divan and a secret room in a mansion where a practical joker hid his victims. Imagination is the prime requisite for actor and speetator. Members of the Play Acting 315 class enjoy improvisation the most. You see, when you improvise, you don’t need stage settings, lines, story. Four or five students are given a situation and immediately develop it into a scene. An excellent way to prepare for an ambitious season that lies ahead. - During one class period when improvisation is on the schedule, each of the 20 drama students

ss have a chance to give their all. The actors are

Jean Ann Bates, David Berry, Keith Bratton, Ed Buckheister, Jim Catten, Carolyn Connerly, Diana Harvey, Mary Sue Jacobs, Bob Joseph, Nell Kinzel, Mike Kirsh, Dick Kuennen, Ken Lauer, Barbara Mattingly, Bill Mattingly, Patty Payne, Jane Perry, Don Schladman, Bill Sylvester and Cliff Wagoner. > ¢ I WOULD LIKE to echo Mrs. Reisler’'s amazement at the ability.of the students to begin with an idea and develop it into a scene that holds your interest and seldom bogs down. Every word and gesture is spontaneous. Sometimes the wit and play on words is so sparkling that it seems a shame the students don’t have a wire recorder. Some of the stuff is worthy of being heard over and over again. : Clif Wagoner, Dave Berry, Diana Harvey, © Jean Ann Bates, Ed Buckheister and Bill Sylvester were the first to draw acting assignments.

‘ They were to show how three evil persons with 4 designs on the wealth of a fourth party slipped a

drugged drink (Mickey) to the victim. Cliff Wagoner was the victim. Bill Sylvester was the butler. Bill, who is a star football player with the Tryons and freshman coach for the Butler Buii-

movies’ answer to television, whether or not the movies know it yet. This is a filming, recording, and projection process which owns the trade name of Cinerama. Its introduction into the average ‘movie theater is as inevitable as the adoption of sound after Al Jolson made “The Jazz Singer,” 20 some years ago. * & Let me see if I can tell you what Cinerama is like. Supose you had front row seats at “South Pacific,” but were so privileged to slide back and forth that you are in closest possible proximity to each soloist while missing nothing of the small- - est detail of the supporting cast. ? : Let's say that you were in a position suddenly to kiss Mary Martin if she leaned across the lights for the purpose. : Let us say, now, that electronics and photography have developed a method by which this approximation of reality is possible "on film. You are in a roller coaster as it dips shudderingly down the giant slide, and your belly twists and writhes. You are riding a surfboat with the actual rider, and spray spatters you. You are in a giant's vantage point at a vast parade, or frightened on the heaving deck of a carrier, or at the bucking controls of a plane, or at the throbbing organ at a concert. : : eS is ALL THESE things are vividly obtainable with Cinerama, which has perfected the first true threedimensional technique, not only of photography but of compatible sound as well. It has been a long research project, involving several millions and much talent. : The ¢ skill was supplied by ‘Fred Waller, the man who created the Polarvid gunnery-training films that saved so many lives in the last war. The pioneering in sound "was largely furnished by Reev Sound Studios, under the guidance of an authentic geinlus named Hazard Reeves, who provided much of the military's electronic tricks during ww twice. : rere a As sound had to come to movies, as color has come, this three-dimensional stuff has got'to come. With this you look and listen to life, not to a flat picture or a statically distributed sound effects, ’ it" is projected by three simultaneous projectors, and the sound surges from six mikes into one
