Good Player Skips Worry ~ Over Discard
Odds Against Man Trying to Be Hero
By OSWALD JACOBY THE THEORY involved in the play of the hand described in my last article is so important that I intend to devnte this article to it. You may recall that player A melded three aces at his iret turn to play. One of the opponents promptly froze the discard pile and followed up that nay by discarding a couple of aces. This particular play was sound canasta strategy. He and his partner each held eleven cards.
respectively. Enters Into Spirit vored his side in the battle for
the discard pile and he was willing to start an all-out fight for it.
{r.to the spirit of battle, He also threw away a couple of aces. Then he followed by throwing additional wild cards into the frozen ple. This was bad canasta strategy. Fy playing that way he was committing his side to all out battle for the pile. They might win the battle of course, in which case he would be a hero, but the fact remained that the odds were against him. His partner only held eight cards.
Can't Win Every Hand A REALLY good canasta play-| er would have said to himself.) “We can't win every hand we| play. The opponents are. trying| to get this pile and will win the hand if they do, However, if we try to go out there is a chance, that we will be able ta do so hefore they get the pile. “Therefore, may correct play is to- add to my partner's ace meld right now and to discard without worrying too much about whether or not my discard will give away the pile, After all, if we lose it now, we still will be able to go out before we come to any great harm.” Ritter Fight Waged ONCE his vartner discarded ‘his aces poor A was in an im-| possible situation, He could still] play for out but his chances of going out quickly would not be good, Furthermore, the discard‘ pile had increased greatly in both size and value. Eventually A came to! the conclusion that he had better go along with the fight. Hence,| A discarded "is wild cards also, | This last series of plays was correct canasta strategy. The dis-| card pile had grown to a point! where the side that got it would surely win a very big hand.

» » ” A PLAIN, bigger coffee table makes more of a change in the looks of a room than you think when it is traded for a small and fussy one, and so do big, handsome lamps when they chase out dinky, elaborate ones. Remember, too, that good decorating is often helped by subtraction. There may be too many things in the room, a number of which got there one at a time, to add up too much so gradually you didn’t notice. Try stripping the room down to fundamentals and see. if it wouldn’t be better looking {if many items were permanently left out. Use a definite; inspired color scheme to decorate, In stead of a clutter of accessories and frills.
