Divorce reforms and elimination of ‘politics in county courts

were promised last night, “if Democratic candidates are elected.” Clarence F. Merrell, candidate

for judge of Marion County Circuit Court made the pledge before Democrats in the home of Mrs. Milo Stuart, 4535 Park Ave. Mr. Merrell said he and the

other five Democratic candidates for the county judgeships have signed a statement “definitely pledging that, if . . . elected, they will be absolutely free from all political influence sa far as the Democratic Party is concerned.” Statistics show 47 per cent as many couples were divorced In| 1948 as were {issued marriage! licenses,” Mr, Merrell said, “in the nine county courts, occupied by judges in the Republican Party. |

Carl B. Watson Dies at Home

Carl B, Watson, owner of a| surgical supply firm and a prac-| ticing chiropractor, died yester-| day in his home, 726 N. DeQuincy St. He was 57. Born in Shelbyville, he lived! here 38 years. He was a member of the Irvington Lodge F&AM and the Murat Shrine. Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Moore and Kirk Irvington Chapel. Place of burial has not been announced. Surviving are his wife, Edna; four daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Pearcy, Mrs. Mary Webb, Mrs. Eleanor Wood and Mrs. Phyllis Russell; a brother, Noble, and a sister, Mrs. Howard Watts, all of Indianapolis. TORY'S HEIR ARRESTED CIRENCESTER, England, Oct. 18 (UP)-—Woggan Phillipps, heir of the Conservative peer, Lord Milford, was fined $14 today for selling tickets for an illegal Communist Party lottery.
