makes sense. That's partly because of the simple libretto, still more because of expert and sensible direction, which this season is the work of Desire Defrere. The direction deserves double praise, since “La Boheme” can either have meaning or be completely pointless, silly and worthy of parody, depending on how it's treated. The simpler and more direct the treatment, the better the results in such an episodic, rather l60sely connected plot. Without the music, “La Beoheme” would be next to nothing. But Puccini contrived to make
