Rizzuto For '50
By MILTON RICHMAN, United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, Oct. 1T—Election day is just around the corner and so is a heavy landslide for Phil Rizzuto of the Yankees and Jim Konstanty of the Phillies as the most valuable players in their re-
spective leagues.
It is exceedingly difficult, if not downright impossible, to single! out any major leaguer who contributed more to his 2lub in 1950 than
Rizzuto or Konslanty. The pint-sized Yankee shortstop should win the American League award by a comfortable. enough although Billy Goodman
"of the 'RtdaSiox also 13 expected
to poll his share of votes. Konstanty in 74 Games Rizzyto, a veritable whirling dervish on spikes, played in every one of his team’s 155 games, batted a rousing .324, fielded with the easiest grace imaginable and to top it all off, stole 12 bases. Konstanty, while saddled with #8 less impressive assignment, was every bit as brilliant for the Phillies. Cast in a relief role, the blonde, bespectacled 34-year-old righthander was called on day after day and established a startling mark for consistency in emergencies. He won 16 games, lost only seven and set a modern major league record by appearing in 74 games. “He's My Boy” Then, to prove he was capable fn any contingency, the wellspoken Worcester, N. Y., wizard made his first start of the year in the opening game of the World Series and gave a creditable account of himself before absorbing a 1 to 0 defeat against the hardhitting Yankees. Neither Rizzuto nor Konstanty require campaign managers to muster votes for them but each has a legion of supporters. ‘ Manager Eddie Sawyer of the Phillies said it simply and elo-| quently after naming Konstanty to start the World Series. ;
