wife, reigning Truman administration hostess until her appointment as Minister to Luxembourg last year, has been hovering under the piano in the elaborate establishment of Mrs, Morris Cafritz, the current pretender to the throne. This high-class héx is all the fault of the new musical, “Call Me Madam.” which opened in New York this week. “Call Me Madam” has to do with Washington society, and with a rich Wash- |. ington hostess built somewhat along the lines of, and directly inspired by, Mme. Mesta. At Mme. Cafritz, wife of a wealthy, selfmade real the services of a young man to sere- | nade her guests. This was her first party What did the guests request most enthusiastically? ... “The

terely cut, severely plain little silver. lame, with just a single emerald and diamond necklace to take the chill off. Among stalwarts of gracious living in the capital who helped her get things going were the dean of the diplomatic corps, Ambassador Wilhelm Munthe de Morgenstierne of Norway, and Mme. De Morgenstierne, Associate Supreme Court Justice and Mrs. Tom Clark, the handsome and distinguished Baron Constantine de Stackelberg, and some snappy Georgetown society whose names mean nothing nationally, but mean considerably more than an average politician on a Washington guest list. Onward and upward.
Flapper Fashions SUCH weil-known flappers as Fda Brannan, wife of That Man With the Plan, Agriculture Secretary Charles F. Brannan, Mme. Henri Bonnet, wife of the French ambassador; Mrs. Clinton P. Anderson, wife of the New Mexico Senator, and Mrs. Russell Long, wife of the Louisianna Senator, looked like Scott Fitzgerald heroines several evenings ago. * The prominent cabinet and official wives modeled clothes of the Charleston and bathtub gin era, up through the Thirties and Forties to the grim atomic present. The fashion show was part of a Community Chest benefit. Mrs. Brannan fixed her hair in spit curls and something called “cootie buns.” I am reliably informed by an historian that the cootie buns is.a variety
of pompadour, ruffled up excessively, and named cootie buns by . disrespectful males of the period.
Twenties to Now MRS. BRANNAN, who is tal ish (5 feet, 8 inches), size 12, with one of the slimmest official figures, was chosen to display the rather ghastly and wunflattering line of a Middle Twenties evening dress. It was a rosy red chiffon number, heavily beaded, with a nonexistent waistline and skirt ending just below the knee,
Takes It With Him THERE WAS certainly nothing wistful about the public career of retiring Defense Secretary Louis Johnson, but it had a rather sweet-sour little last gasp, a combination Saroyan and musical comedy scene in the corridor of the Pentagon several days ago. An enlisted man was wheeling a little cart down the corridor from the office of the Defense Secretary. The cart held china and glassware, with the seal of the United States and the Defense Department. An officer, passing, inquired what was going on, and the enlisted man said, “Under ‘gulations, Sir, this china benes the property of the reing Defense Secretary if he » desires. - Mr. Johnson is taking it with him.” From across the hall another officer watched. He saluted the cart of china and intoned in a lugubrious voice, “With the thanks of a grateful nation.”
