“away,”

rather have died a thousand times than disobey the lady!” she sobbed. “She's so kind ond good!”

Of course the Administrator and his co- .

workers were bitterly disappointed that oll their efforts fo break down the children’s story had been in vain. After some thought, it wos decided to keep the youngsters prisoner for another 24 hours. Perhaps the promise of 0 good begting might change their minds. Or the sight of some oil that was really boiling. . Buf on the momming of August 15, the Administrator recognized the truth. If he kept the little shepherds’ any longer, he might hove to deal with an angry mob from Fatima. Perhaps eVen now the parents were planning some kind of revenge. “Stupid brats!” he exclaimed. “I've wasted enough time with you! Get back to your families!” As the children stared in joyful amazement, the Administrator's car appeared ond a policeman hustled them inside. There was no time to lose, he said. The Moss of Our Lady's feast was being offered right now in Fatima. If the children were returned while everyone was in church, there would be less chonce of a disturbance. As the Administrator's cor lurched clong the winding road from Ourem to Fatima, the three youngsters began to readjust themselves to the everyday world. It wos now August 15, and they had been in prison for two days. The lady's visit (if she had come) wos over and done with. But after the first stob of sorrow, they begon. to put the past behind and to look forward te what awaited them in Fatima. How good to be free! To be going home to families and to friends’ “I wonder if the*lady came while we were whisperad Jacinta excitedly. “What do you think?” Lucia shook her head. “I don’t know.” “We con find out ofter we get home,” declared Francisco. “Surely somebody went to the Cova on the thirteenth.” In just a few minutes a somewhat uneasy policeman had deposited the three youngsters at the gate of the parish priest's house in_ Fatima, while the Administrator —- pretending o carefree indifference—took himself off in his car to the marketplace. } Francisco looked about. There was not a soul in sight, for Mass was still in progress. "Lucia, let's go to church,” he suggested. “After all, it's "Our Lady's feast.” But the policeman would fot hear of it. “You stay with me,” he -muttered grimly. “I've been ordered to_deliver you safely to your families, and that's what I'm going to do.” However, the children were permitted to go up onto the rectory porch to play until Mass wos over. And it wos there thet Manuel Marto presently found them.

dren.

“Oh, come on! It won't toke a minute” The good man hesitated. Well he «new that the crowd wos in an angry mood, rendy to fall upon the magistrate at his slightest word. But he also knew thet thete would-be no trouble if he himself acted wisely. “Very well,” he replied. “Just one glass.” As her father turned to go, Jocinta grasped his sleeve. “Will it be all right to visit the Cova before we go home?’ she whispered. “We want to thank the lady for having brought us back.” Manuel gave his little daughter an of-fectionate-embrace. “Of course, child. Run alopg.” Then, assuming a friendliness which he certainly did not feel, he went with the Administrator to a nearby tavern. “It's all right,” he told the crowd again.

“There's no need to get excited.”

Of course there was great rejoicing when the children finally arrived home, although Antonio and Maria Rosa dos Santos were still unconvinced that Lucia’s story about the lady was true. “Weren't you worried about me at oll?” asked the little girl. “1... | thought about you so much!’ . Maria Rosa smiled grimly. She loved her doughter, but hers was o stern nature. “Why, I thought os any sensible creature would think, Lucia. | said to myself: ‘If these children have been telling lies, here's their if they've been telling the truth,

punishment, Our Lady will take care of them.’ However, Olimpia Marto lost no time mn satisfying the little: ones’ curiosity os to what had happened on the thirteenth of August. On that dreadful day more than six thousand people had gone to the Cova da Iria for the expected apparition. A good many were ill at ease, for a. rumor had spread thot o small extinct volcano near the pasture was going to erupt through the Devil's power and burn everyone to death. "Of course that was sheer nonsense, chilNothing like that happened ot oll.” “What did happen Mother?” asked Jocinta, her eyes shining. “Our Lady come as usual?” - ‘ “Yes, child, I'm sure she did, olthough we didn't see her. “Oh, I'll never forget the wonder as long os | live!” Lucia and Francisco looked up Sogerly. “Tell us everything!” they begged. Soon the whole story was out. Noon had come and gone at the Cova on the thirteenth, and nothing unusual had heppened. Everyone was arguing and wondering what to do about the kidnapping when suddenly there was a clap of thunder. Then came a flosh of lightning, so dazzling that it could be seen in spite of the sunshine. Some cried out that the volcano wos about to erupt, and ron away as fast as they could. But the rest stayed, silent: ond fearful, before the holm oak, Then without any warning a cloud

away “What do you want of me?” child eagerly. “| want you to continue to come to the Cova de Iria on the thirteenth and to con. tinue to say the Rosory every doy” “Couldn't you please work a miracle so

thot everyone will believe in you?”

“Yes, in the lost month, in October, | shall perform a miracle so that cll mgy believe in my apparitions. But if you had not been taken to Ourem, the miracle would have been far greater.” Then the lady briefly described part of what would happen in October. Saint Joseph would appear. with the Child Jesus to give peace to the world. Our Lord also would come and bless the assembled crowd Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Sorrows would be on hand, too. Suddenly Lucia remembered a particularly troublesome matter. What was to be done

~ with the money which people were starting

to leave in the Cova, on the little table which. had been placed near the holm ock? “Two stretchers should be made. You ond Jacinta are to carry one, with twa other «t's, All of you ore to be dressed in white cisco and three other bovs' also dressed in white, are to carry the other stretcher. The money is to be placed on the stretchers ond used for the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. What is left over is for the support cf the chapel which will be built.” “Pledise, there are some sick people who want to be cured. " “Yes, some of them I shall cure during the year.” But even os she made this last promise, the lody impressed upon Lucia the fact that health of soul is far more important than health of body "Pray. pray a great deal, and make sacrifices for sinners,” she urged. "Many souls go to hell because they have no one to sacrifice and to pray for them." Then, as she had done on her previous visits, the lady began to glide eastward from the top of the tree. In a moment she had disappeared into thin air, leaving the young shepherds gazing ‘after her with rapt faces.

Fran.

“How beautiful she is! sighed Jacinta

after a moment's silence. “Lucia, whenever the lady comes, | always feel so happy! Why, right now | feel | could walk on’ gir!’ Her cousin nodded. “Yes, | know that feeling. And see that tree, Jacintc? The one where the lady stood? Let's breck off a branch and toke it home. Maybe Mother will feel as happy or we do when she sees it. ‘Maybe . . . why, maybe she’ It even start believe in the lady, too!
