Dealers Let Buyers Pick Accessories

Agencies Shaping Policies to Keep Public Confidence

Br THE TIMES AUTOMOBILE EDITOR Auto dealers rolling into their new model season, on their desks, are playing it safe. They aren't loading cars, pushing buyers around. They've taken the in-business-to-stay attitude, getting their roots down in public confidence. And if your car comes through with more on it-than you wanted, mark it down that the extras went on at the factory, Don’t blame the dealer. The automobile business wraps up into some $25 billion a year. That's tires, used cars, batteries, oil and gas. And that's not a toy to be tampered with. New car pressure isn't what it usually is compared to the customary run-out on the old models. The reason is that buyers under-| stand the new cars may not be! a great deal different from present models, There will be model Identity marks, chroming and; grille design, and maybe rear end treatment, not much more in several big lines, » ~

ONE OF THE BIG MAKERS Is expected to introduce a line of new engines. But don’t count on that until you see them. They aren't faking chances with too high compression with the war f@irain-off due in high octane gasolines. But war hasn't touched the motor Industry vet. The best ss as to how much cutback ere will be was made by Gen-| “sral Motors’ Charles Wilson last! week. He said from 10 to 15 per pent, And with production where it! going on, with that won't cut

#t, what will happen when the! roads are solid New York to Los Angeles, bump er to bumper as they are on the| sidewaik-smooth Merritt way when New York goes “upit in the country” for a week-end? Makers expect to turn out 7.5 million vehicles this year, that in-! eludes trucks.

That's almost enough to circle

the globe or make a 25000 mile parade, # =n u ALREADY PRODUCTION'S pushing highways. there will be 2

growing number of éars. Then there's a growing appreelation of the relationship between! auto ownership and highway up-| keep, especially when those big express highways which wind in and out of cities are included. It's going to cost more money to own an automobile—in taxes. And the best guess is that it'll soon cost more money to buy one too. f
