Hoosier Profile
IF THERE'S ONE WORD Maj. Gen. Daniel B. Strickler leans on hard, it’s dependability. “The outstanding quality of a leader is dependability,” said the commander of the 28th Division, which is in training at Camp Atterbury. Gen, Strickler isn’t the type of-leader who is hard to:get along with. He's fair but firm, and he’s exceptionally conscientious over the care of his troops. The 53-year-old commander, who filled in the office of Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania before he and his Pennsylvania National Guard were federalized a month ago, knows his staff and his division. That's because he's the only officer to serve in combat with the 28th Diyision in both World Wars. ;
Called ‘Danny Boy’ ) HIS TROOPS know that the calm, mildmannered “old man,” who also is called “Danny Boy” by fellow veteran generals, is much a “GI General” as five-star Gen. Omar Bradley. A native of Pennsylvania and the son of a farmer who later turned banker and then merchant fen. Strickler has divided his life between political and military worlds. His military career began in 1916, when he was 19 and a senior in high school. He and several classmates enlisted as privates in the old Fourth Pennsylvania Infantry. On Dec, 24, 1947, a little over 31«years later, he was elevated to the rank of major general in command of the 28th Division, Pennsylvania National Guard. In 1917, after high school graduation, he saw duty as a sergeant at the Mexican border. He was commissioned a lieutenant after he was mustered out of service, then re-entered later that
year. This was when the 28th Division was formed. On his 21st birthday, Gen. Strickler, then a
lieutenant, crossed ‘the English Channel for combat duty in France. That was .in May, 1918. He took command of the 109th Machine Gun Battalion two months later, then rose to become the youngest captain in World War 1. He was wounded and gassed that August, and ¢ was cited for bravery the next month. After five major campaigns, and the Armistice, he was discharged and transferred to Captain of Infantry Reserve. His education interrupted three years, young Mr. Strickler entered Cornell -University in 1919. As dependable in college as in the Army, he captained the track team under Coach Jack Moakley. He was president of his Senior class, in addition to holding the presidency of other college organizations. These included the Quill and Dagger, Alpha Kappa chapter, Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Phi Delta Phi honorary law fraternity, British-American Club and Cornell Officers’ Club. Graduation came in 1922, then admission to the bar of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in September, 1923. By 1929 he had been admitted to the bar of the Lancaster County, Pa. courts, Superior Court of Pennsylvania and U, 8. District and U. 8. Supreme Courts.
