THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES

. THE LOCAL slow-footed, “heavy-handed truant officer” is a fake. In the first place he's a she . . . Miss Bertha Leming, head of the social service department of Indianapolis Public Schools. It’s been a couple of generations since snooping school inspectors chased-iittle Johnny away from his favorite “swimmin’ ”* hole, Miss Leming-#aid.

Parents Do Work Now

“NOW, THANK GOODNESS, the majority of parents do the work of the old truant officer. They are interested in having their children in school. And most -of them are coming to realize that only through good school attendarice can their children get by in this increasingly competitive world,” Miss Leming explained. pr Her friendly smile, efficient organization of her 24-hour day and the know-how that comes from more than 30 years’ practical experience, make the graying native Hoosier almost indispensable in the school system. “Our job can pretty well be summed up in one sentence, though it has more facets than a fancy diamond. “To help Johnny to stay in school with the greatest benefit to himself and to the community.” The “new philosophy” of assistance rather than force has kept pace with the broadening of the curriculum and progressive ‘methods of teaching.

School Commissioners and is part of the schools’ ’ educational staff. Before her appointment as de-

visor of school services more than 15 years. “I'm pretty proud of the attendance record” said Miss Leming, referring to steady improvement registered on classroom rollbooks during the past five years. Last semester attendance was better than 90 per cent with unexcused absences less than 1 per cent. ’ She has a theory about children who are out of school every other day or so. “There's rarely a child who misses consistently who doesn’t have big problems at home.” Working under or in close co-operation with her department are more than 30 schdol social workers. Minimum requirements for the job include one year of graduate study in a school of social work. Besides a M.A. degree from Indiana University ;and numerous courses and seminars in social work, Miss Leming applies experience gained in the lean days of the depression to the job at hand. Typical reasons keeping an elementary pupil out of school includes carelessness on the part of ‘the parents, economics pressure. Sometimes the -very young just can't keep up and they don’t want to attend. Problems at the high school level are of a ‘different nature, said Miss Leming. “Usually you've got a young adult who finds himself unable to make a satisfactory adjustment to the ‘demands of community. Instability of the age ‘group, boredom, and desire to quit school, to have
