the parish priest had ordered them to begin 6 shrine that would rival the famous grotto ‘at Lourdes and thus bring both pilgrims and prominence to Fatima. “You see, sir, there's nothing more to it thon this,” explained the assistant. “These peasants want to make some extra money. So, when the priest promised them a share in what future pilgrims would leave. . . ." “Exactly!” broke in the deputy. “I've olways felt that religion isa cleverly organized business. Now | know it. The sooner we can
close every church in Portugal, as we have -
done with the convents and seminaries, the sooner we con have an extra source of income ond less taxes for ourselves. That's the way it is in a really up-to-date country.” The Administrator's crafty eyes lit up. “I do believe you're right,” he said. “If we can do something up here in the hills to. kill religion. . . . “And we can, sir. Every little: bit helps.” “Of course. Go, order these stupid children and their fathers to come to Ourem. Let them see that we understand their little game.’ So a message was dispatched to Aljustrel
(the hamlet on the outskirts of Fatima which
was fast becoming famous), announcing that Antonio dos Santos, father of Lucia, and
Manuel Marto, father of Francisco end Jo-
cinta, must appear before the Administrator
“will go into hysterics.
“That stubborn little girl wouldn't give me her promise not to go to the Cova,” he thought. “That means she and the others will be there on Monday. They'll pretend the heavenly lady came and talked to them once more, and thousands of stupid people But,” and there was a cruel gleam in the Administrator's eyes, “it would be o different story—if the chil-. dren were kept away from the Cova “by force!” The more he thought, the mote the Administrator was convinced that he had hit upon the perfect plan to put an end to the embarrassing happening at Fatime. It would be so easy to kidnap the children! On Mondoy, just os they were setting out for the Cova, he would drive up to their house with his horse ond wagon. He would be. very kind and gracious. He would even apologize for his previous harsh words. Then he would beg the parents’ permission to drive the three children to the sheep pasture. He would assure them that he was beginning to believe in the heavenly lady, and that he wished to be on hand at the Cova as a pil-
grim. Surely they couldn’t refuse him per-
mission to escort it in a spirit -of reparation? On the morning of the thirteenth day of August, the Administrator put the first part of his unholy plan into action. With a grand
eyes brightened as they noted a steéple glistening in the sun... The church! Probably the parish priest lived only o few steps away, and they could see him at once. Then, what joy! They could be on their way back to Fatima. Once again the lady would stend atop the holm ook. She would encourage her little friends fo pray and make sacrifices for sinners. Perhaps there might even be @ new message. . Suddenly Lucia’s blood ran cold. - The wagon wasn’t stopping at the church or
© rectory, but before a large and imposing
residence. As the child turned to the Administrator, her eyes were dark with suspicion. “This isn’t the priest's house!” “No? What is it then?” “Its . . . it's where you live?” The man laughed harshly. “Quite Aight, my girl. And remember this: the jail isn’t far away. Come, now—out with the three of you!” The jail! Francisco and Jacinta cringed as the Administrator jerked, them from the wagon. What was going to happen? What was this! “terrible man going to do? + To be continued Chapter VII will appear in The Indianapolis Times next Monday, Oct. 2nd.
