Inside Indianapolis
A BRAND NEW HOOSIER who can hardly speak English is a junior at Shortridge High School. He flew. 5646 miles from his native Athens Greece, to study here, Christopher A. Papachristos, 16-year-old son of a Greek general’ likes Indianapolis and likes America. His present plans, however, call for completion of a medical course at Indiana University and return to his native land.
Residing With Relatives THE DARK-EYED, curly-haired young Greek
uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kostas, 22 E. 37th St., to finish his education. His English is halting but he can reel off Latin and Greek like a master. Young Papachristos, the son of Gen. Aristidis Papachristos of the Greek Army, has been in. America just 45 days. He tells how he came by air, via Rome, Paris and London, to be met by his relatives in New York. “I like Indianapolis,” he says with a frank smile. “It is a lot like Athens and my uncle and aunt are good to me. The climate is not so good as that of Athens, however.” Indianapolis, the United States and Shortridge High School present a strange picture to Chris. In Greece he is a graduate of Gymnasium, the same as high school here. It was a boy's school, he hastens to explain. Girls in Greece do not go to Gymnasium with boys. For many years, since long before the war, Chris has planned for an American education World War II and subsequent developments in

I must go back when I complete my education.” In his limited English, sometimes translated from a small Greek-English dictionary he carries in his hip pocket, he says he would study “doctor” at 1. U, after graduating from Shortridge. His studies, English, United States history, algebra and chemistry, are not particularly hard, he says. He says he studied English six months in Greece when he knew he was coming to America.
