GOP Candidates

File Non-Red Oaths

Forty - one Republican candidates for Marion County offices and the state legislature have filed non-Communist affidavits with the County Recorder. The candidates pledged in the affidavits to prevent “by all lawful means the placing or retainfellow traveler or sympathizer in any branch of the federal, state or county government.” Alembert W. Brayton, nominee for State Representative, who prepared the aflidavits said: “Communism is not a party in the traditional American sense but a world conspiracy to destroy freedom and free peoples. While Americans are fighting to stop Communist aggression abroad. ve must not permit Communist infiltration = at home, Loyal Hoosiers want to be sure that subversives and their sympathizers do not find their way into or remain in places of public trust. “The affidavit of each candidate states, under the penalty for perjury, that he is not a member of the Communist Party or affiliated with such party, and that he does not believe in and is not a member or supporter of any organization that believes in or teaches the “ overthrow of the United States government by force or by any illegal or unconstitutional methods.”
