The Ohio buckeye and the sweet buckeye of the Eastern United States is closely related to the horse-chestnut, a popular shide tree ‘of both Europe and America. All three trees bear round prickly balls which open in the fall to expose from one to five shining, smooth, mahogany colored nuts. Most animals will not eat the fruit, even squirrels pass it by, but hogs will sometimes eat the nuts of the sweet or yellow buckeye. : Boys have always prized the shiny nuts and have used them for trading or as good luck pocket pieces. Thers are many little objects which can be made from buckeyes and horse-chestnuts, but this little turtle which I saw made by a mountain boy near the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is something which you might like to try. a Simply take a splinter of soft wood and whittle out a pointed tail on one end and a head on the other, with four slivers Yor the legs. Cut a notch in the nut with your knife, then push {he wood into position. Make a “good luck” turtle. TOMO
