Many Items Scarce Many building items are scarce. Among them are lumber, cement, brick, sofl pipe and gypsum hoard. But part of the shortage is laid to scare buying, strikes as in the cement industry, a scarcitv of hox cars, and a general failure of the building supply industry to anticipate 1950 requirements. A commerce department report takes the view that the building supply picture is not as dark as recently painted. For instance, lumber production this year is expected to be 40 billilon board feet-—largest since 1916. Western and northern pine are now coming from the mills faster than shipments or current orders. Douglas fir production is above shipments but below orders. Southern hardwood is behind the rates of shipment, and southern pine is behind both shipments and orders. Military requireménts for lumber in the next 10 months. are placed at 1.5 billion board feet, mainly for erating.
Cement production is expected: to be_212 million barrels this
year. The industry, which waited
