Tven the avant-garde boys and! girls themselves are wont to tem-| per their modernity with something old—be it a Han bronze, a 17th century painting, a Breughel print, or some Indian basketry.

~The “cult of the primitive,” as one of our more acid designers of reactionary tendency calls it,

is really not new. Picasso and other early modern artists have been influenced by African scuipture as well as the works of other seemingly simpler civilizations. Now you see cast imitations of little African gods in every gift shop. What is happening in modern design? ONE: You can use something old with the new, if it is fine in itself. TWO: You needn't be a “phony” =let yourself be comfortable. “THREE: If stark simplicity is ~your—habit;—O:~K=but you can be “elegant” if you want to. FOUR: You should realize that good modern design, relevant to today's rooms, is getting away from bulkiness. A show of legs -i8 decent.

By JEAN TABBERT Six top-flight modernists, the “haute couture” of the home furnishings world, set it humming this fall.

They've designed a series of 33 fabrics, dubbed “stimulus”

by Schiffer prints, who manu-

{| factures them. The patterns -are-original,—-yet-livable,

The fabrics, selvage - signed by the designer, are conversation pieces, yet some one will act as subtle background for almost any type of furnishings. Best of all, they're budget-wise. Colors . are fresh, materials vat-dyed, and washable, Handscreened, they will bring the best in contemporary design to your home.

Crosspatch three-dimensional effect. This is a George Nelson pattern, available either in blue, black, on gray; emerald green, black on sand or brown, black on white combinations. Mrs. Eames concocted the “Cross Patch” abstraction. It's her idea of juvenile sign language, done in black, brown, gray on white; black, medium brown, pale blue on sand; green, red, chartreuse on gray or black, red, blue on yellow. All the designs are available at Adams, and Co., Inc. ’

Three of the patterns are . pictured above. Typewriter let-. ters, laid out in wide horizontal stripes, make up “Zeros.” The letters are accented by bands of contrasting color. Striking color combinations are navy and gold on natural; copper and gray on natural or red and gold on natural. Mr. Rudofsky did this design.

Refinishing Furniture

fF AN = J

By ELIZABETH HILLYER THE FINISH on old furnisfure may be the handsomest thing about it. Good care and age itself brings the wood a much-prized mellowness and rich color. But if someone with misguided good intentions once slapped a thick coat of varnish on the old furniture, or it’s too gloomy in color for the room where {it's needed, it may take refinishing or new paint to make it useful again, Old furniture can fit into a room that's as young and gay

as this if it's painted shell

pink, a powdery blue or pale yellow green. » » » REMOVE the old finish completely. Paint and varnish remover usually does the job more easily. than sanding, and the semi-paste type of remover helps because it does not drip down when it's used on the upright parts of the furniture.

A coat of sealer readies the wood for painting. Use flat paint or semi-gloss rather than a too-shiny enamel for the pale colors that are so pretty for a young girl's room.
