Sermon of the Week—
‘Marching Forward . . .
This “Sermon of the Week” summarizes the. sermon to be preached today by the Rev. A. C. Brooks, pastor of the Third ‘Christian Church, of the Philippians were inclined to pride themselves in having
“attained great heights in spirit-
uality, Paul admits that he has not yet attained perfect Christian experience, but he is inr tensely interested in marching forward for the purpose. of achieving the high zoal of the Christie n life Hz compares this to the runner in the stadium, He suggests that spiritual self salisfaction is a deterrent to any real advance. Paul attempts to forget his Jewish privileges and attainment and even tnat part. of the Christian race which he has :ilready run. He would not repose on memories and ‘suggests that the ability of knowing how and what (5 forget is an indication of intelligence. We are™ too prone to revive amiable nonessentials. This - is dangerous becans» it leads (0 narrowmindedness, The goal or the prize of the upward call of God as révealed in Christ is the purified life. This reswjts from unbroken and complete fellowship with Christ.

to keep step with one another and to keep marching forward within intense zeal.
J " =» 5 TODAY, let us think of our mission and our needs. There is the story of an_ artist who was asked to. paint a picture of a decaying church. He did not paint an old tottering building in ruins; rather he painted a magnificent structure with priceless stained glass windows, a richly ¢arved pulpit and chancel, beautiful drapes and curtains, and comfortable pews. But it was a dead church. It had-no spirit because there was no genuine worship in it. Is this the picture of the modern church? Some of our
most pressing
needs are not physical expan-
sions, repairs, or replacements. Our greatest need is to understand what the business of the church is and what we as churchmen are contributing to that business. We believe the church's stipreme business is to keep men alive. Many men are already dead because they have
satin can be you. There is in this world nothing sacred but man, no sanctuary of God but the soul.” » ” ~ IT IS DIFFICULT for us te think of marching forward in times like these. We have dreamed of one world, and Christ preached such a world, a world ruled by the will of God, a world of brotherhood of ~ Sr TES :
=. OK POR earned by moral discipline. But that is not the kind of a world we are in. In fact, we have two worlds today, each dominated by a philosophy that is diametrically opposed to the othér, The two philosophies of our two worlds have to do with two different concepts of man, of God, and of the universe, One places authority in a few | supposed supermen; the other puts authority in the common people and those whom they | elect themselves.. One philoso- | phy believes in God, and _the | other is anti-God— These two | philosophies are in a death grip. |
Our Christian world has been |:
drawn into the dilemma of trying to stop the pagan commu- | nistic idea with the very weapon
which it has always repudiated, |
namely, war. We are in a vici- | ous circle of attempting to check an idea with force, the | result of which will till the soil | for the further germination and spread of the very idea we are attempting to check. : The situation seems hopeless; vet it-isn’t. It is our belief that God can still work miracles and that he can use us as channels for His own, victory.
