Ask Mrs. Manners—

JACK MCINTYRE of Bloomfield is a profes- ; sional farmer. At least he WAS a professional farmer until he became Indiana Department commander of the American Legion. ~The demands of his new job may force him to spend more time in the commander’s chair in Indianapolis than in the tractor saddle on the McIntyre farm. The young Marine veteran won his new post in a hotly contested election last month during the department's 32d annual convention.

Among Youngest to Get Job

AT 34, MR. McINTYRE is one of the youngest men to hold the highest Legion office in the state. He is the first Marine to hold the post. When Lt. Gov. John Watkins administered Commander Mclntyre’'s path of office, the two men completed a cycle that started its swing back in 1946. That was when Mr. McIntyre first joined the Legion. Fresh from the Marine Corps separation center in Chicago, he “hopped” a train southward to Indiana at 9 a. m. on April 15. At 8 p. m. that same day, Ydischarged Cpl. McIntyre .became a Legionnaire. Lt. Gov, Watkins signed him up. Since that night Cmdr. McIntyre has completed a steady climb to the top of the organization here. He has been zone membership chairman covering the Seventh and Eighth Legion districts. Last year his zone was the only unit to score an “above average” membership quota boost. . Mr. McIntyre also became House Committee chairman and headed the Athletic Committee of his home post, Memorial 196. Under his direction the post basketball team won 29 of 37 games played. Other posts included Seventh District commander and southern vice commander for Indiana. Cmdr. McIntyre attacks his new duties with a vigor that belies the “first” medical reports filed in his Selective Service folder. In 1942, the draft riedical report indicated he was doomed to die within nine years. But a quick trip to a private physician dispelled his fears. There was a mistake. The wrong report was filed under Jack Melntyre's name. Healthy and sound, he applied for the review of his case which was necessary to permit his enlistment, He was one of two men in a draft of 62 selected for Marine service. He was assigned to China. Outdoor life was made to order for Cmdr. McIntyre. Farm chores have kept him busy in the rain and sun. When not actively engaged in farming, he worked in the Rural Electrification program. Starting as a digger, his aptitude later won him promotions to resident engineer. This work sent him into most of the southern Indiana counties. Traditional rural environment was his. He attended a one-room school and for a time was transported to classes in a horse-drawn school bus. The McIntyre’s have 100 acres and rent another 500. About 400 are under cultivation for porn. Soybedra and wheat. e oO e outstanding memories for Cmdr, McIntyre is the purchase of the farm's milking machine while the family was in the dairy business in the mid-1930’s. The Legionnaire helped milk by hand after learning when he was 4,
