THREE: If the floor is worn or drab in appearance, spring is! a good time to replace it. A! weatherproof flooring material] such as quarry tile will take heavy-duty wear and also provide needed color. FOUR: Check the condition and paint of furniture. Old canvas on deck chairs and glider cushions should be given a coat of nonfad awning paint, obtainable at harware and paint stores. FIVE: If furniture is needed for the porch, now is the time to buy or build it. Full-scale patterns for constructing simple wood furniture can be obtained from magazines on home building and planning. Provide Toy Space SIX: If there are children in the family, provide a. space on the porch for their toys. SEVEN: Screens: usually need painting every year. Thin the paint, so that the screen mesh i will not be clogged, and use a screen paint applicator rather than a brush. EIGHT: Check the entrance ‘door of the porch. It should fit snugly and its spring should be ‘in good condition. NINE: If small children will use the porch, put a lock or latch on the outside door, high enough that they can not reach it. They

How to Keep Out Water Flow in: Window Wells
WHOEVER invented window wells around basement windows didn’t stop to think that they could become just that—wells full of water. - These window wells can-fill the basement with water as well as fresh air and light. But there's a way to get around this water collector. - If your soil is well drained; chances are 12 to 18 inches of gravel in the well bottom will stop any water seeping around the basement windows. But the gravel has to be below the bottom of the window.
IF THE soil is not well drained, forget the gravel and put in a drain tile. Connect it with a dry well or -storm sewer. If all this is too much work, make little wooden tops, hinge them to the house and use them like hatch covers on a ship. But remember if it starts to rain, somebody has to be around to batten down, the hatches.

Squares must be large enough to permit the upper edge to fit up under the second shingle about two inches. If nails are encountered, cut them off with a shingle hook or an old chisel. Be sure to replace the nail when the flashing is completed. Around dormers or between any wall and roof surface, the flashing should extend up under the siding and out over the shin-| gles. Strips eight or nine inches long should be applied in a series] of overlapping sheets, starting at the bottom. If the siding is already in place, it can be bent and shoved up under the siding. The shingles are then laid on
