Chemical Town of oe . Sonjin Hard Hit By CHARLES MOORE United Press Staff Correspondent TOKYO, Sept. 8 -— American |B-29 Superforts blasted the im{portant North Korean chemical jand rail town of Sonjin for the second consecutive day today: while Ameriean fighters flew from dawn to dusk -in support of the ground troops. Gen. Douglas - MacArthur's {headquarters announced that the |B-29s concentrated on a mag{nesium plani and rail center in Sonjin, on the northeast coast of Korea. dropping “a large number of bomhs.” At the same time. other B:29's | ranged over other parts of Korea, {hitting Communist communica{tions lines. No fignters or flak were encountered and the weather ranged {from clear to. cloudy and rainy. | Soupy Weather Clears § { Heavy rain was reported fall{ing on the critical northeastern front where the fighters. have {been hammering at Communist troops, tanks and supply columns. But the soupy weather cleared sufficiently in the north to permit the B-29 sto hit their targets: {without radar. i One target was a huge indus{trial plant tormerly known as the Nippon - magnesite chemical in-! dustrial, 83 miles below Chongjin. Aerial photographs showed the {factory had been expanded con-! |siderbly since the end of World War II and now includes modern {buildings and warenouses for rehemiecal products. Railroad - shops, - marshaling yards and switching areas in |Chongjin also were hit today. The bad weather put a crimp in {allied aerial activity as early as {last night, when the Mustangs and jets were held on the ground. As a result only. about 550 |sorties were registered Thursday, as compared with 625 Wednesday. The toll of damage clair-ed also took a sharp drop. A summary of air activity during the 24 hours ending at midnight Thursday claimed only nine tanks destroyed or damaged, as against 41 in the preceding 24hour period.
