Dayton Man Builds
Business on Old Coins,
DAYTON, 0. (UP) Aug. 26— James Kelly, ‘Dayton’'s professional numismatist, makes his
hard -cash; “He does right well, too. : From his three-room suite in a bank building, Mr. Kelly conducts | one of the .country’s largest rare! coin businesses. With two regular office helpers and two more part time, Kelly also puts out a monthly trade publication, “Coins and Chatters,” that has world-wide
Mr. Kelly, who says he came; into the business “the hard way —through books,” thinks it’s useless to look for valuable coins in your own pocket. “l don’t even check my own cange, "” Mr. Kelly said, “In my years in the coin business I don't think I've bought over $2500 worth of stuff from non-collect-ors.” Some Suggestions Although Mr. Kelly thinks publicity is bad for his trade (“We get flooded with junk”), he consented to give the following list to amateur Sherlocks of the rare doubloon: The 1916 quarter with the standing Liberty, (Worth $5). The 1914 Lincoln cent, mint stamp “D,” and the 1908 Lincoln cent, mint stamp “8.” (Worth about $1 each.) The 1916 dime, mint stamp “D. " (Worth $2.) The age of a coin doesn't faean, much when figuring its value, Mr. | Kelly says. ! “A 1942 dime that has been struck over a 1941 model will sell for around $12.50, yet some of the oldest Greek coins won't sell for more than that” he pointed out. How much a coin has been circulated also figures into its worth, Travel Required “Take the 1799 large cent, for example; uncirculated, it brings around $2000; badly worn, it's worth only $25” Mr, Kelly said. . Mr. Kelly entered” the business during the depression, when most brothers couldn't spare a dime, even a dirty old rare one. Mr. Kelly's business requires a lot of travel, wood for the Adoph Menjou sale in June. He'll be at the national numismatic convention in Milwaukee in August and in Europe
