“I guess I get almost as many calls as anyone :
in the €ity,” Mrs, Helen Mitchum, clerk of Marjon County's four draft boards, said wearily, peering over a growing stack of registrants’ pi
oS Switchboard operators in the War Memorial headquarters of the combined boards recently logged more than a thousand calls in four days. Most of these telephone inquiries are useless, take valuable time of Mrs. Mitchum’'s harried staff of eight helpers” and occasional volunteer aids, delay urgent ‘clerical processing, add gray hairs to the h¥ad of the city’s rifst lady of Selec- - tive Service.
Husband. Son Saw Service
WHAT DRIVES Mrs. Mitchum, born in East Side Indianapolis Oct. 9 at the turning point of the century? What makes her put that little bit of extra effort into her work, that speck of special attention to boys facing service in the uniform of
....the nation?
~“fs it the fact her own son served 43 months in the Marines during the combat days of World War II? Or does her husband, disabled veteran of World War" 1, inspire her to greater effort?
4 / Whatever it is, it is sufficient® for state Se-
lective Service Director Gen. Robinson Hitchcock. F-her-as among the niost- efficient of Indiana’s local board clerks, Sheepskin from Manual High came to Mrs. Mitchum, then Helen Benner, in 1916. A year of intensive 'stenographic study at Laine Business College followed. Then began a business association as administrative clerk with Indiana Standard Oil that has lasted “off and on” for 27 years. Her marriage in 1921 to Rolland Mitchum, an Indianapolis coppersmith just returned from the AEF Army of Occupation, was followed by a ‘stretch of homemaking. Then came the birth of her only child, Robert, the now ex-Mariné who-

Now she is active only in Naomi Chapter, OES, of which she has been a member 31 years, and Robison-Ragsdale Post, American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Mitchum takes much pride ih her neat brick bungalow at 4817 E. 12th St, is proud of her cooking and hand-crocheted decorations. She doesn’t find spare time to continue her woolen afghans or other needlework.

The draft board! plugs stolidly on. | The job has already lost its. glamor. Few! volunteer helpers show up for duty as they did in the first few days. It's strictly a routine filing, writing, typing, interviewing, endless question-an-swering job. “Certainly most of our work is only paperwork, but down here we're conscious of the fact we are dealing in human lives,” said Mrs. Mitchum.
