Report Chandler Fed up With Saigh’s ‘Insults’

NEW YORK, July 31--War hetween Commissioner Albert B. Chandler and Fred M. Saigh Jr. president of the 8t. Louis Cardinals, which week by week has grown more intense since

Happy killed Fred's scheme to play a Sunday night game with the Dodgers at Sportsman's Park, has reached a point at which alapmists Fay it may be a matter of one or the other getting out of baseball. Neither plans a peaceful withdrawal The field may be getting too éonstricted’ to permit both men to continue in it unless their current state of intense antagonism for each other is abated. Chandler's friends predict that he will not much longer “continue to take Baigh's insubordination and

insults,” and that a showdown may come before the annual ses: gions of the major league in Chicago in December rn » . n un ~ SAIGH'S intimates charge the commissioner with having

made derogatory statements about the 8t. Louis magnate, which Fred is sald to plan to force Happy to prove or retract, In so far as the general baseball public Is concerned, the rhubarb lacks interest and appeal. Emphatically, it is {ll-tinfted, if nothing else, Baseball is confronted with the possibility of another war, and perhaps another fight for its life : _Before this season 18 ended, quite a few of our young stars

may be on their way into military service. The major leagues will have to gird for another manpower crisis, and concentrate on the solution of internal perplexities far more vital than a quarrel between Chandler and Baigh: - M ~ » - ss THE COMMISSIONER'S contract does not expire until Apr. 24, 1052. It would seem that this time element, at least, affords him a strategic edge over Bajgh. Meanwhile, both antagonists would do well to chuck the whole thing and concentrate on much more serious business. 8algh tried to sfir up trouble for Chandler at the joint meeting of the major leagues in Chicago on July 10, on the eve of the All-Btar ga'me. The effort resulting in failure, Fred charged out of the session, with the announcement that his associates were lacking In the commodity which the Baxons called guts. . ~ ” ” » » ~ THE QUARREL between Chandler and Salgh goes back something like a year. It was sub rosa until last winter, when the president of the Cardinals made an official demurrer against the commissioner's clean bill of health for the Pittsburgh ¢lub in the Paul Pettit case,

: \ Vhen, In June, Chandler announced that he had ordered the

Cardinals to cancel plans for a Sunday night meeting with Brooklyn on July 18, Baigh rebelled. He said he would go right on selling tickets for the scheduled play-off of a postponement, It was Ford Frick who induced Saigh to surrender on that point. It developed that last February, in New York, the major leagues had adopted a secret rule forbidding “the playing of a scheduled game on any Sunday night,” Why this was not made public at the time has yet to be explained.

- . ” ” - » IN ANY EVENT, Baigh quibbled that the affair he sought to put on was not a scheduled game, but the clearing of a postponed date. Frick ruled out Baigh's legalistic argufying, and a project which would have injured baseball in the eyes of millions of our best people was abandoned. Saigh's anger smouldered, TF It scarcely is a secret that Saigh is talking up denial of a second term to Chandler. Stewart Symington is sald to be Fred's favorite for the succession. Happy lost a strong booster and unofficial campaign manager recently, when Frank McKinney sold his Pittsburgh holdings to John W. Galbreath. However, Chandler "=fill ‘has a majority in the National League, and at least a six-to- two support in the American League, -

AFTER the joint session here last February, McKinney, with Bill DeWitt sitting by, read a memorandum which he said had been adopted by the majors, and which the St. Louis president and he had been named to announce to the press. This statement pointed out that it never had been the praetice of the club owners to consider a new contract for the commissioner earlier than a year before expiration of the old one and it appeared to be wise to continue that policy. However, in the long administration of the late Judge Kenesaw M. Landis, the majors had voted a $15,000 salary increase for Albert Benjamin, » . » - = . “CHANDLER will get a new contract not later than next December, perhaps even as early as the time of the World Series,” McKinney added. There will be no action on the contract in October. But there appear to be many reasons to believe that Happy will be signed to a new agreement in December. In normal times, Saigh might have gained a few recruits for his sullen campaign. But the war in Korea is Chandler's ally.
