Taylor Leads Parade

Heads ‘Roman Legion’

On ‘Quo Vadis’ Location

By Earl Wilson ROME, July 27—I went out to the old Appian Way that was here in Nero's time and found that Hollywood has improved it—if you can call dark glasses and chewing

gum “improvements.”

Robert Taylor, a Nebraska boy, was standing up in a chariot, pulled by two snorting steeds, leading a parade

of 1800 extras, supposed to be Roman legionnaires returning from a three-year war. : Taylor's armor and helmet Jooked heavy — but they were made of plastic and sent from Hollywood. It was al! part of the titanic $7 million Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production, “Quo Vadis.” The Roman legionnaires—several had been chewing gum and had forgot to park it—were whip« ‘ping their men and women slaves they had captured. . “Multa, muita!” the assistant director yelled to the legionnaires with the whips as they approached the cameras—and they whipped (and chewed) harder. The extras that played the slaves had rouge or red pencil marks on their backs.

ts They were supposed to be welts

from the whippings. A 1950 airplane flew over this scene that was supposed to have occurred in 65 A. D, Down at the gnd of the parade ground was a Coca-Cola stand, It was, as you can begin to

see, amazing, gigantic, and superstupendous. - n » s , THE APPIAN WAY is today - Robert Taylor a modern, although narrow high-| vinicius, a Roman pagan general way, still lined with Roman wy, falls in love with a Christian tombs—Ilargish buildings which girl (Deborah Kerr), came over are broken and in ruins. land took off his big helmet and “There are bodies all around sighed about the heat. here,” Producer Mervyn Leroy said. “Some Romans saved UPipis wife, La Stanwyck, “can all their lives to have a fancy] never get warm ping She's funeral. always chilly.
