Would Raise Salaries By BOB BOURNE Marion County departments will request about $1.3 million . more for 1951 than they received in 1950 Most of the increase will go for salary raises, and some will come in the form of increased services to the public. The individual have proposed budgets totaling 36645269. This may be contrasted with $5.385231 granted for this year. The figure for 1950’ does not include $481.100 alloted! for reassessment which, of course, will not be repeated next year, Since 1945. expenditures of the county departments have doubled.

Rate Seen Steady Officials have estimated the tax rate for the county not increase much. With a few minor exceptions, pvery department will ask increases, Sheriff Cunningham is requesting the largest increase percentagewise. He is asking a hoost from the £131,000 granted for this year to $298700 for next yerr Increases to personnel and salary raises to present employees would add $126.520 to budvet. In 1945 the jail was maintained for $88,721, less than one third of the requested figure for next year. County Commissioners are requesting $525,000 for their de partment for the next year con. trasted with $449,505 spent this year,

Clerk Asks Boost Prices are up all along the line, Some salaries are going up, to where the political offices can compete with private business for employees, and other salaries may ha raissd to the level held before the , money-saving council cut them this year. | County Clerk "A. Jack Tilson: said he was requesting $203,060 contrasted with $166,555 granted! his office this year, and $166,331 spent five years ago. “The increase will go to bring the salaries of our personnel up to where they should he” Mr. Tilson said. The cost of maintaining the county's 15 courts will he only|] slightly increased. Most of the in-| crease is made up in payment for special judges and increased costs| of law books. A sum of $208.550 was granted | for this year and $301.975 will be| requested for next year's operations. 1851 Rate Uncertain Since 1045, the county tax rate) has climed from 43¢ to 63c. It is almost impossible to predict a tax
rate for 1951 in face of the yet-to-' .
come reassessment figures. The largest total increase is requested for the Welfare Depart ment. A total of $4,822,060 was asked in 1950, and a total budget of $7,217,152 has been scheduled for next year.

FROM WHENCE COME WARS? Scripture: “From whence come wars and fightings among you?
| Come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members,” (James 4:1).
AS WE think of the fact that the Lord spared our godly Puritan forefathers of a major war from the time they settled in Jamestown, Virginia until the Revolutionary War, then 90 years between the Revolutionary War and the Cjvil War which ended in 1865; 50 years until World War 1; only 20 years more until World War II, and now in five years another war may be in the making,
it is time we should look deeply into the cause of war. When Israel became wicked, the Lord even told

take them into captivity. There is a good parallel between the Thirteen Original Colonies founded for religious freedom and the Twelve Tribes of the Children of Israel. When Israel cried unto the Lord in repentance, “He delivered them.” Now, in the light of this text, let us look ourselves honestly in the face. Time and again in the hours of their crises or calamities, the Lord rebuked Israel for not regarding “My Sabbaths,” They certainly could not be guilty than we are in Christian America. We are shocked, and alarmed at the number of super-markets and other places of business which are staying open unnecessarily on Sunday. Policemen tell us that by far the major number of our crimes are committed on the week-end. Statistics show that over 50 per the American people do attend church

anywhere. In other words, only in America do we find multitudes of people who do not worship any god except the dollar and pleasure in general. Even in heathen countries, have some form of worship. We have tried to laugh sobriety and modesty out of court and forgotten the fact that “righteousness exaiteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” If you read a recent article in Reader's Digest on the “Twilight . of Honor” you were shocked at the amount of political corruption and fraud in our government circles. Truly the Scripture says "When the wicked rule, the people mourn.”
But, before we charge them too | let us remember that | they are the products and fruits | of our own ungodliness and un- !

to the creation of this world ‘and the creation of mankind, We have substituted “Thus saith man” for "Thus saith the Lord,” therefore, are we seeing the words of Psalms 2: 4, 5 come to pass “He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: The Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall He speak unto them in His wrath and vex them in His sore displeasure.” We have not successfully sidetracked the Lord, nor His Word in our indifference. He is simply letting us reap the seed we have sown.
