Today in the officer training school for Panzers in Mech- | lenburg at Rostock the “Goliath” is again pounding dummy fortiSefications in maneuver . . . as = the experts labor to further streamline its terror tactics.
Wehrmacht is no mere gang of carbine carriers can be found in
grounds for artillery at Burg.
Here, self-propelled armored guns — crawling Buck Rogers sluggers — churn the “enemy” trenches. How quick can the new Wehrmacht enlarge, assuming supplies are sufficient? Dr. Kurt Schumacher, leadér of the German Socialist Party, spoke for a group of competent observers when he said; “The first aim is the establishment of an army of 150,000. Then 50,000 recruits will be enlisted every six months . . finally to have 350,000 to 400000.”
= - e IN ADDITION to the 50,000man Wehrmacht “now in being” (as American Army men describe it) there are roughly 250,000 men doing regular police work in Eastern Germany . . Including the torture of anti-Communists. These cops—I've seen them patrol East Berlin—are just a
now in being. They are not the pot-bellied, gentle grafting, apple stealing, smiling corner fiatfoots who patrol American streets. Mostly ‘oid Wehrmacht veterans, they pack rifles and Tommy guns, live and train like an army— besides chasing ball-playing kids and speeders. I'm toid by East and West German officials that in stx to eight months all these Communist coppers could be worked into the new Wehrmacht. Another plump source of partially militarized body power is the Freie Deutsche Jungend (FDJ), Stalin's steal from the Hitler Youth. The FDJ's are from six to 36. The leadership is old Wehrmacht. And probably two million or more belong. Don't question that figure! Remember: almost a half-mil-lion Communist kids journeyed

I saw the older members of the FDJ exhibit their gliders in East Berlin. They told me that extensive glider training goes on in the Eastern Zone. Remember again: It was in such machineless planes that the first German airmen took wing after World War I. They formed the nucleus for the lusty Luftwaffe later launched by Fats Goering. Even the high seas are studfed as a field for the Bereitschaften. At Schwerin a small sailor school operates. So far they've only got a few old Wehrmacht patrol boats. But with Russia creating a worrisome submarine squadron, | what would be more practical than having ex-German U-boaters—the best underwater geniuses known—operate a Prussian section?
Tomorrow: How the Russian control of the new Wehrmachs$ works on a barracks leave.
