| + ‘liaison Planes - Alight in Small Space By MAX B. COOK Seripps-Howard Aviation Editor An ingenious “wrong-way rockot” anchor has been developed by the Air Force to allow combat Maison aircraft and gliders to gr jand in tiny areas. ’ In rough terrain such as in Korea, they could prove invaiu- : in saving equipment and lives, making landings possible for supplies and personnel where now are impossible, { Getting heavy gliders and. liaison aircraft out of small areas no longer is a problem. Small JA TO (Rocket-assisted-takeoff) ‘units zoom the light liaison planes into the air quickly. Gliders, up to the heaviest type. can be “snatched” from the ground by low-flying tow planes. i Burried in Ground { The wrong-way rocket anchor . comprises a steel tube, 28 inches long. 13% inches in diameter and filled with rocket propellant. It is inserted into a holder in the aircraft's tail assembly. Just before touching the ground, the pilot pushes a button in the cockpit. This discharges the anchor into the ground to a depth of about 18 inches, at a 435-degree angle.

200-foot stainless steel ribbon wound on a hydraulic brake. The| brake absorbs the energy at the time of the braking action and| permits a smooth, easy stop. Other Methods Used In a recent test, an 1-13 (Hai-| son plane), flying in at 75 miles per hour, was stopped hy the afichor within 168 feet. Usually! this plane requires 700 feet for stopping. Several means of slowing up landings of fast jet fighters and! bombers also have been developed! - by the Alr Force. Large parachutes, released from the tail, are! used on some jet bombers to reduce landing distance. Reverse JATO rockets also are in use. When the upcoming turbo-prop-| powered fighters and bombers take to the air, reversible pitch, propellers will do the trick just as they are used on the hig alr-| liners.

Engineers of All-American Aviation are co-operating with the Air Force in rocket anchor tests and peacetime use of the! anchor make many new small] areas available for airline feeder! Service in tl the he future, it is sald. &
