The following report on boom times In Alaska Is written by Arthur Niehoff, former Indianapolis Times carrier here, graduate of Indiana University, and now a student of Columbia University, New York. With Mrs. Niehoff, he is spending the summer in Alaska. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Niehoff, 1216 Comer Ave.
By ARTHUR NIEHOFF FAIRBANKS, Alaska, July 15 «This is a boom town. As in Montana and Nevada, the silver dollar can be heard | here clinking on the streets. And| along with the silver dollar are] the slot machines. The two seem] to make a single unit where-| ever they are found in the United | States or its territories. New construction is to be seen) everywhere. People are putting | up new hotels, new motels, new réstaurants, and every other con- | ceivable kind of business estab-| lishment. Yet still in the middle of the | town can be seen log cabins, the roofs covered with sod and the cracks between the logs chinked up with moss, the same sort of buildings that were used by the| old sourdoughs when they came during the gold rush of 98. { Fairbanks probably was made) by the events of the war, It is] not a convenient town to get to as far as Alaskan towns go. It is more than 200 miles from the sea at the nearest point. And roads in Alaska and through Canada to . Alaska still have much to be desired before they can carry much of the burden of transportation. The main] means of transport for heavy goods 1s still by sea. Lighter] freight and passengers depend. heavily on airplanes.

during the war. And presumably because there was such a premium on shipping and there were such hazards attending it, | the Alaska Highway was built. The airfields are still here. And| now the highway is bringing tourists up to Alaska and Fairbanks, Fairbanks is prospering. | Prices are high. Eggs are a dollar a dozen, lemons a dollar a dozen, cabbage 20 cents a pound. tomatoes at 70 cents for a box
Gasoline ranges between 40 and B50 cents a gallon.

| Part of the high prices is due to the extra expense of shipping the goods. But this cannot be| entirely the reason of the prices. | For I talked with some Alaskans | who were here before the war and they say that prices were] only slightly higher than prices | in the States before the war, | Beards for Celebration
We were amazed at the beards) when we hit Fairbanks. At least] 60 or 70 per cent of the men wore beards, of different densities, | length, and tailoring. ! I thought at first that we had run into a bunch of sourdoughs| which I had thought were an| extinct species of man. It turned out later that these were not sourdoughs but that the beards were in memory of those men. | They were preparing for a celebration “Days of '98," and the men with the most glorious beard was to get a prize.

Mrs. Pyllis Goff, 1902 Park Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana, is now able to go about her housework in less time than it takes to talk about it. That is, of course, since Mrs. Goff has been taking wonderful HAD-| ACOL. Mrs. Goff had been suf-| fering from a deficiency of Vitamins H1, B2, Niacin, and Tron, which HADACOL contains.
Now full of pep and energy, Mrs. Goff is able to give this fine statement: “It's pretty bad when “you are in & run-down condition; when you are only 32.
