America Schedules Boost in Shipments
To Western Europe WASHINGTON, July 15 (UP) «The United States and its western European partners will bined rearmament program, expand and speed up their comAmerican officials disclosed tonight. The officials sald an urgent | plan being worked out by the| White House and the Defense and State Departments calls for a “substantial” increase of
American arms shipments to Western Europe above the $1 billion program now clearing] Congress, | The new program may double the figure now under considera tion. It also proposes an increase in defense production by the) other 11 European members of the North Atlantic Defense pact.
Authorities said that arms aid also will be increased and speeding to Asiatic countries under the plan being discussed by Sec-| retary of State Dean Acheson, Defense Secretary Louis John-| son, and Mr. Truman's adviser, W. Averell Harriman. The urgency of European rearmament was underscored by officials who said defense shipments across the Atlamtic have kept on schedule so far despite the need for arms in Korea. Thirty ships were said to be loading arms at U. 8. ports or to be on the high seas this week with arms for Europe. Recondi-| tioned tanks were said to be en route to Atlantic ports for the
