' (Shay) Minton, United States Supreme Court
Marshall E, Hanley. 30, late of Muncie, had just finished two of the most grueling weeks of his life. Sworn into office Wednesday, following the “long Fourth,” Marshall's head swirled when the short week ended yesterday. He had dealt with mountains of paper work, leafed through reams of new federal regulations and gained courtroom expérience in two Friday sessions of Southern District Federal Court. The husky, six-foot-plus protege of Sherman
judge, has shouldered the responsibilities of his . $6000-a-year federal post and now is at the servjce of the nation. It's no accident that Mr. Hanley finds himself in the chair of first assistant to U. 8. Attorney Matthew E. Welsh. From shortly after his birth in . Muncie and through his adolescent years he has been training for civic service, -
Heads for Public Life
VIRTUALLY A LIFELONG resident of Muncle, Marshall is the son of Frank A. Hanley, Ford dealer in the White. River city of some 50,000 population. The elder Mr, Hanley is a “Legion friend” of Judge Minton, Paul V. MeNutt, former Indiana governor, and Pleas Greenlee, former Indiana Democratic state chairman.
So, the steps of the younger Marshal! | naturally gravitated toward public life,

The eldest of three children, and the only one ; v scare days of last summer when a civil suit engaged in politics, Mr. Hanley first caught the 4) .atened to back up disease breeding city garbpolitical fever at the age of 14 when he attended age in warehouses and city streets. |
the 1934 state Democtgatic convention in -Indianapolis at which Judge Minton was nominated to carry the party banner in the senatorial race.
Later, Mr. Hanley served as a page in the Indiana General Assembly and was elected precinct committeeman of the exclusive and almost solidly Republican 26th residential precinct of Muncie at the age of 21. ‘
In 1838, 40, '46 and '48, he served in the state speakers bureau of the Democratic Party. The ink was still wet on his A. B. degree from Indiana University in 1942 when the promising young party worker tried to offer his services to the nation in another way. Some 10 physical examinations later and after having applied to three branches of the service, Mr. Hanley gave up trying to get into the fight.
The ravages of a childhood struggle with rheumatic fever left him a disqualifying heart murmur, service doctors said. -
So Mr. Hanley devoted his time to the study of law and was graduated with honors from Harvard Law School in 1945.
That's when “Shay” Minton saw a bright future for the young man and took.him under his wing and into his Chicago Court of Appeals office as a law clerk. Some 18 months later, he was adopted as a partner in Judge Minton's former law firm at New Albany.
The city of Muncie heard more from Mr, Hanley when he campaigned for his father who ran for 10th District Congressman in 1947, only to lose out in a close decision to Ralph Harvey (Rep. Newcastle). As a reward for supporting reform Mayor Lester E. Holloway in the 1947 mayoralty battle, Mr. Hanley was appointed city attorney, And to his new home in Muncie he took his new wife, the former Elaine Bowers of Anderson. The Hanley's have been relocated in Indianapolis now for more than a fortnight. They live in a rambling ranch house in Windsor Village, 6622 Commodore Dr. with their daugh-

Ex-Head of 11th District
WHILE MR. HANLEY was president of the Young Democrats, 1947-49, in the 8th ‘district, U. 8. Attorney Welsh was president of the organi- | zation in the Tth district. Recently appointed Judge William E. Steckler is also a former president of the 11th district group. And they were all close friends. Friendship with Mr, Welsh and Judge Minton plus ability brought appointment to the coveted first assistant post only last week. Speedy Senate | confirmation followed. Mr. Hanley has a “wait and see” attitude about his‘ political future. Right now he's head over) heels in his new duties, He has a strong respect
